I want to get a new mobile phone and use Asda mobile as it has very cheap
rates. The handsets they have on the site are a bit lackluster, I'm
probably thinking about getting a Samsung Soul U900. I think there is an
unlock code for this but it resets the IMEI number. I've been thinking
about getting it as sim-free which I may do if I can find it cheap enough.
What I wanted to ask is is there any provider that do free or cheap unlocks
and if I get a branded phone can I definitely use it on Asda mobile.
Asda do use Vodafones network so I thought if I got a vodafone phone that I
could just put an Asda sim in and it would work, but I read otherwise, does
anyone else have any experience unlocking your phone for asda mobile?

Buy any PAYG from CPW with £10 credit, use it up, then get an Asda SIM.
All PAYG phones from CPW are open.

There seems to be one potential problem, at least with O2 PAYG K810i I
bought
from CPW.
WAP starts on Google Search page as a default and I have not succeeded in
resetting the home page to Orange World.
I have to go to Orange World via this default start up page.

That's a sweeping statement, CPW usually use unlocked GSM stock,
except for Orange who won't let them.

Eh..? How can an unlock code reset the IMEI which is hard coded into the
phone..?

My ex-Vodafone K800i worked fine with Asda and there's lots of anecdotal
evidence, at least on the moneysavingexpert.com forums, that other
people have had the same experience. But, as you say, there are others
who claim otherwise.
Were I in your position I would get a Vodafone PAYG handset with minimum
credit then try the Asda SIM. If it works you're sorted, and if it
doesn't you'll only need to get the unlock code from Vodafone, or take
it to the "guy down the market". Shouldn't cost you more than ten to
fifteen quid either way.
Hell, if you're buying from a third party provider like CPW or P4U you
could even be really cheeky and ask to try an Asda SIM in a Vodafone
handset before you buy. It's of no benefit to them whether you carry on
topping up your Vodafone account or not, so if it's the difference
between a sale or no sale they might just let you try first.
As another poster said, a lot of CPW's handsets used to be unlocked
anyway, so if you're going to go down the cheeky route above there may
not even be a need to restrict your options to Vodafone handsets.

Well, I only put it here because that is what the managers of three
different CPW outlets have told me within the last week, confirmed when
I bought a Nokia 2760 yesterday.

Although if the phone is a CPW "exclusive" such as this silver and pink SE
W380i... http://shop.carphonewarehouse.com/pa...nk/orange/ojt/
....it'll be unlocked even on Orange. At least the one I got my mum for xmas
was, bog standard SIM free phone and a pre-registered Orange PAYG SIM pack.

Might be exclusive to CPW in silver/black only. Available at O2 amongst
others but in gold or pink.
