Default Virgin mobile - help needed

I'm considering switching to the Virgin mobile network but was
wondering if anyone can advise of it's reliability/coverage/customer
service levels etc.? I've been on the Orange EQ Virgin tariff for the
last 5 years but my monthly costs are coming in over £15 now, so I
thought I would switch to Virgin's sim-only offer of £20 with 300
texts and 300 mins a month.

I'm planning to keep the EQ Virgin tariff but diverting all calls to
the Virgin number, if I decide to sign up for it - but is there anyway
to divert texts as well?

Many thanks.

I've been with them for more than 3 years. Coverage obviously depends on
where you are. They're using the T-Mobile network. I'm never had any
coverage problems myself (northern ireland). Ringing CS will cost you 10p
(flat rate), they'll credit that to your account if it turns out that the
problem came from them. I've always found them very helpful although it
often takes a good 15-20 minutes before you get to speak to somebody. No
reliability problems. You can contact them by email too, i've done it twice
and got an answer whithin 1 day.

Their web site is crap, only works half the time but they've launched a new
web site so it might be a bit better now.

I don't think that you can divert texts as well. Why don't you just port
your number to Virgin?

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately Orange have informed me that if I
port my number I can no longer go back the EQ Virgin tariff in future.
It's an excellent price plan and I don't want to loose it, so it means
having to divert everything if I switched to Virgin now. Shame about
the texts though.

I live near to London, so I guess the coverage wouldn't be at all bad
near here. I've always been led to believe that Orange's coverage was
the best, and didn't know anything about T-Mobile.

Diverted numbers will be charged at 35p/min as they will be
cross-network

Unfortunately that will have to be the case. Unless Orange plan to
reintroduce the EQ Virgin price plan I can't afford to lose it by
porting my number. I even tried asking Orange's customer services last
night if they would EQ the price plan I'm interested in at Virgin - got
a stony silence and then the usual "You can only choose the plans on
offer on our EQ webpage, or go for an Orange 'Animal' tarrif".
Unfortunately the only plans they seem to EQ now are for T-Mobile, O2
and Vodafone.

Unless the coverage/relibility of Virgin is really poor then I'll just
have to divert calls to the new number on Virgin. Seems a shame as I
thought the whole idea of EQ was to attract customers away from other
carriers and onto Orange by copying any/allcompetitor tarrifs?

You could always move onto the actual Virgin tariff that Orange "EQ" at
any time from your Virgin SIM only offer. This is actually better than
the Orange equivalent as Orange have not modified the plan with the
last few changes (like 3p texts) that Virgin have more recently
introduced.

Why not record an "extended absence" message on your OVP-Virgin
answerphone telling everyone your new Virgin number? That way you get to
keep your OVP Virgin (at zero running costs) and everyone that calls
gets your new number. It's worked for me for the last two years...

Orange haven't OVP'd the 5p minimum charge either. Or the GPRS rate.
