Updates are usually triggered when you try to access the internet on the
phone.

yes it does work although it only updates when you make a GPRS
connection. so either access the internet or set the GPRS to "always
online". This will update the time everytime the phone is turned on
as it attaches to the GPRS network. (it wont cost anything to leave it
on always online btw)

This is a Nokia 3410. The manual says nothing about it having GPRS. It
does offer WAP, with the data bearer type being "GSM data".
That being so, how does "auto-update of time and date" actually work?

When abroad my phone automatically updates itself to the local date
and time without even making a call. When in the US, sticking on the
same network and travelling across time zones it automatically updated
itself whilst sat on the car dash.
Whenever returning to the UK on O2 (recently) or Orange/Voda (a few
years ago) it would never update itself back to UK time on various
Nokia's and S.E's I've had so I don't think it's implemented as well
as it could be over in the UK.

If its not got GPRS then the time won't be updated. In theory it could
update using GSM when you switch the phone on as it does abroad in
certain countries however not in the UK. Also 3G phones dont update
when connecting to the 3G network only the 2G with GPRS. O2 and T-
Mobile dont support any updating.

It does work, but your device cannot make use of it.
