It's more to do with R&D than production costs. Markup on SIM free
phones is not very much at all, maybe £25 - £30 a box.

They are sophisticated pieces of electronic equipment. The percieved
value of them is very low because the UK phone buyng public has been
conditioned over the last 20 years to *expect* a free phone every
year/18 months/24 months. The reality is that high-end mobile phones are
expensive things to buy, that's the long and short of it.
