Default Vodafone enters UK iPhone market

Vodafone has reached an agreement to sell Apple's popular iPhone in the UK.

The announcement follows news that network operator Orange had secured a
similar agreement with Apple.

The deals mark an end to the exclusive UK arrangement between O2 and the
US technology firm, which has been in place since 2007.

Vodafone says users can register an interest online, with the handsets
becoming available to customers from early 2010.

Ok, so Orange & Vodafone.

So what position does that leave T-mobile in?

LOL!
I Still wouldn't go back to Orange as the network coverage where I live is
next to nothing.

I may get it on Vodafone as my contract is due March 2010...

i'd consider one when i can get it for free as part of my contract - i like
my ipod touch and adding phone functionality would be nice - even though i
think for phone use tactile buttons matter.

Well, I already have more minutes than I can use, more texts than I
can use, free off-peak calls and free landline calls + unlimited
internet.
All I need to do is get them to give me an iPhone 3GS to complete the
package.

Is it possible to buy the handset direct from Apple in the UK and just
go with whatever network you want either contract or PAYG?

Also, I am just wondering why in general when you look at just the
cost of the handsets alone (for all mobile phones in general) they are
so extortionate? As an example you are looking at £495 for a Nokia N96
from CPW. How much does it cost to make the N96 the iPhone 3GS and
other mobile phones? What must the markup be on these products?

You can buy the latest Asus SeaShell Netbook a lot cheaper than the
majority of these mobile phones and that's a computer system for
surfing the web with a big 10" screen. Are Mobile Phone companies like
Samsung, Nokia, Apple, Sony, Motorola, RIM, LG not in colusion with
the operators conspiring to rip off the consumers?

Could you manufacture one for less?

It's more to do with R&D than production costs. Markup on SIM free
phones is not very much at all, maybe £25 - £30 a box.

Not much good for carrying in one's pocket then?

They are sophisticated pieces of electronic equipment. The percieved
value of them is very low because the UK phone buyng public has been
conditioned over the last 20 years to *expect* a free phone every
year/18 months/24 months. The reality is that high-end mobile phones are
expensive things to buy, that's the long and short of it.
