Did they send you any written (/texted/emailed) confirmation of the
contract length subsequent to the phone call where you agreed to the 12
months? If so, then you might have problems - they'd argue that you
should have read it and then cancelled during the cooling-off period if
it wasn't what you thought you were getting.
If not, then it really depends on how bothered you can be. You would
win a case against Vodafone in the small claims court: in this case
(assuming you wish to sign up with another operator once the 12 months
are up) you should pay off the outstanding Vodafone contract in six
months' time, make clear at the time that you are doing so under
protest, and then take Vodafone to court for the money you've just paid
them. The advantage of doing it this way is that it doesn't risk
buggering up your credit rating, whereas a straightforward refusal to
pay for the last 12 months would.
Alternatively, you could do the same thing but without taking them to
court afterwards. In this case you should switch to their cheapest
price plan shortly before the six months are up - I think this is £20
per month (hence a £120 hit in the wallet) but there might be a
cheaper deal they don't advertise.
