Default Vodafone PAYG roaming charges (EU)

Does it cost to receive texts from the UK on a UK Vodafone
PAYG phone in, for example, Spain or Italy?

Detailed info like this always seems to be a right bugger
to find on the official websites...

There are no charges for receiving texts, no matter where the mobile is,
unless you use revenue generating text services, such as voting /
competitions etc.

Which the extra cost is 0p

The incoming calls do cost as you found out. Vodafone charge (on
Passport) 75p per call (upto 1hr) - as long as you use one of their
partner (Vodafone) networks.

Nope. You pay to receive calls, but incoming messages are free.

I do not know of any UK network that charges for incoming SMS texts
when overseas.

In fact they recently expanded the range of countries, and now cover
the whole EU plus a few others

Also true for Virgin Mobile. Outgoing texts are 35p if you PAYG by top-up,
25p if you pay by DD (including PAYG by DD).
