There are no charges for receiving texts, no matter where the mobile is,
unless you use revenue generating text services, such as voting /
competitions etc.

The incoming calls do cost as you found out. Vodafone charge (on
Passport) 75p per call (upto 1hr) - as long as you use one of their
partner (Vodafone) networks.

I do not know of any UK network that charges for incoming SMS texts
when overseas.

In fact they recently expanded the range of countries, and now cover
the whole EU plus a few others

Also true for Virgin Mobile. Outgoing texts are 35p if you PAYG by top-up,
25p if you pay by DD (including PAYG by DD).
