Default What network & handset for remote access?

I've been a long term SE P990/P910 user on Orange. Now looking to
change as I want to make use of 3G for faster internet access and want
to remote access into customer sites via the handset or laptop. What
network gives you unrestricted internet access and will allow VPNs? I
would like to move to Three, as their fall-back network is now Orange,
which has good signal at my home. I called Three this morning, but was
told that their network would not support a VPN. Is this correct?

As far a choosing a new handset, then this is proving a bit of a mine
field too. I had always expected to get a P990i. It seems to tick all
the boxes for features. Also considered the SE M600i, but these cost
about the same as the P990i. However, I would prefer something with a
higher screen resolution, so internet pages are easier to view. I
would prefer a touch screen, as I find this much easier to navigate. I
would also like a qwerty keyboard and WiFi.
The Qtek 90000/i-mate JasJar is the handset which I'm now considering,
as it has a 640x480 resolution. There doesn't seem to be much else
that offers 3G, WiFi, touch screen, qwerty keyboard, good screen
resolution. And of course I've got to find a VPN client (into Dratek
Vigor2800 routers), terminal emulator (telnet client) and ideally a VNC
client too. After a quick Google search, it would seem that all these
are available for Windows Mobile 2005, but not sure if a VNC client is
available for Symbian.

Does anyone have any recommendations to the best network/handset
combination for this?

They've only just started allowing full internet access, so yes it's
probable.

Stick with windows mobile 5. It has built-in ipsec and l2tp vpns. I use
my Orange SPV M3100 (smaller and better version of M5000) to connect to
my draytek vigor 2600 without issue.

I may be misinterpreting what you want, but unless I'm mistaken, you may
just need an extra product added to your account by Orange CS to allow
(albeit without any CS support being available) VPN access.

Speak to CS (might be worth dealing with Data CS to save hassle) and ask for
"Internet Link" to be added to your account. Once done, change your internet
settings to use "internetvpn" (I think - a long time since I used it, if not
someone else will soon be along to correct me) instead of "orangeinternet"
as your access point.

With the P990 being a 3G phone already, this may be the solution you're
looking for?

Regards

Jon.

Default Re: What network & handset for remote access?

Thanks Jon. However, from what I understand, the Orange 3G network is
poor and the main reason to change device and network is to get
something with maximum data capability.
>From what I've found, Three now offer the best 3G coverage (91% of

population). While the P990i has everything, the screen resolution is
the key for making it useable for internet surfing and remote access
applications. While the P990i is good in this respect, most smart
phones are the same as this. The only one that I can find is better is
the i-mate JasJar/Qtek 9000 which has a 640x480 screen.

I'm therefore assuming that a Qtek 9000 on Three would be the best
available combination for data use. I've called Three (business sales)
twice now and they have given me different answers each time to some of
my questions and show no interest in selling me a new contract. Today
I was told that someone will call me back in two days or so!!!!!

Your understanding is flawed.

Possibly, but their data products have been well known for their
restricted nature. Research thoroughly (I.e. find some else doing what
you want to do) before you commit.
