Has anyone signed up to FreeTalk yet? It would be interesting to hear first
impressions and in particular from someone that can compare the service to
Vonage.

Is there no British company that do VOIP?
I am getting fed up with dealing with foreign companies.
If you have a cable modem with an Ethernet port and your PC plugged directly
into that does then does the adaptor allow you to connect both PC and
adaptor to the cable modem or will you need an additional switch/router?

Paul

I should have said not BT, but never mind.
But these companies have they got their own system or do they piggy back
on another?

I can't speak for any other, but voipfone, at present is small enough to
have technical support staff based in the UK, who really know what is going
on with their systems. Meanwhile, the systems themselves are located in
docklands, london.

A DECT phone is an analogue phone as far as a BT wall socket or a VoIP
adapter is concerned, it's only digital between the handset and its base
unit.

Any particular reason, or is this just blind prejudice?
If you think you can set up a VoIP company whose unique selling proposition
is being 100% British, and still make money, then go ahead. Just ask Rover
if you need any advice ;-)

Have just had a look at one in Dixon's I can answer my own question!
The FreeTalk box is small and neat and has the following connectors
1xWAN
1xLAN
1XTelephone Jack
You can therefore either plug it into a spare port on your exist router and
directly into your cable/ADSL modem (assuming it has an Ethernet connection)
and the plug your pc into the phone adaptor.
It looks a great package for those that don't want to dabble.
Nice touches are anonymous call rejection and voicemail is accessed via the
familiar 1571

Paul

I'm sure that if this service is aimed squarely at the consumer, then it'll
have an ethernet pass-through port to connect your LAN to. Then again, DSG
are in the business of selling stuff, so if it didn't...
"Why yes Sir, we have ethernet hubs right here, only £39.99"
....makes perfect commercial sense!

That sounds ok. I am getting fed up of buying aproduct or service and
finding out that it is made abroad. or the owners are abroad.

The people behind Rover had no idea what they was doing. the cars they
built was old models and they needed a a new range.
Phones are a different matter. I should think anyone with the knowledge
and the money could set up a company.

But is it locked? If someone decided that they have had enough of
Freetalk can they use the adaptor for another VOIP supplier?

I imagine it is locked but at £70 for the year inc local & nat call and you
can keep the box (i think) then who cares!
So how do you make sure the products your buying are british, i bet you
grill the sales staff about the validity of wether or not something is
British dont you.

Very wasteful, what if everyone decided to do that? more landfill :-)
I suppose you are right, and it is a good deal considering that my
landline supplier charges £12 a month for the same service, free calls
all day.
But it would still not pay me to go with VOIP at the moment.
