The ATA settings depend upon your voip provider - is that BT in this
instance or are they just your ISP. I'm on cable so I don't have the
hassles or need to understand the ins and outs of ADSL.

It always puzzles me why so many people complain about VM (and ntl: in
the past.)

I have been on their broadband for I don't know how many years and in
all that time I have had only one serious outage (36 hours I think a
couple of Boxing Days ago) and the odd hang of maybe 10 minutes -
perhaps no more than a dozen. I admit that things can get a bit slow in
the early evening, but first thing in the morning my 4Mb service often
exceeds it by getting on for 50% - can't complain at that!

Much of the VM cable network is that which was Telewest and ntl: Can't
speak for the former but ntl: expanded by taking over other cable
providers and it is clear that the install quality of many of this
providers left a lot to be desired. The York/Harrogate area was
originally Bell Cablemedia and I guess their standards were high.

It's nothing to do with the install, just the over-saturation of the
network and as a whole and the lack of money the company has to update
the network to meet bandwidth demand.

BT must be rubbing their hands with Joy as they can now charge real
money to re-connect the fleeing masses from VM.

Sorry, but as I used to be one of the people who helped maintain the
network I can assure you that install quality does matter.

We used to get faults often in Huddersfield, parts of Leeds, and in
parts of S Yorks. I don't ever remember a fibre fault in Harrogate or
York - or in Nottingham for that matter (which was Diamond Cable.)

Quite frankly anyone who changes from a cable feed to ADSL needs their
bumps feeling. Whoever your domestic ISP is you will always get speed
throttling at certain times of day, but a cable feed never fails for the
supplier to accuse you of it being your fault! Remember that when ADSL
is added at the exchange BT or whoever have no idea whatsoever where the
fault is should it stop working. At least a cable supplier can see your
modem - or not.
