Default Can I Connect my BT Hub Phone to my Netgear Router

I have just upgraded my existing BT Internet account to the latest product
and they have supplied me with a BT Home Hub and a Hub Phone handset. I
have a Netgear Modem/Router which is better so I do not intend to use their
Hub unit (I assume anything that calls itself a Hub cannot be as good as a
modern router with 8 way Ethernet Switch). I do not want to install any BT
software as I like to control my modem settings myself.

Is there any way of connecting and registering my BT Hub phone with my
Netgear wireless router as the BT salesman thought it would be possible
since it uses a standard wireless link.

Any ideas appreciated. Thanks

Graham

I don't know much about them, but I thought the
HH handset was DECT rather than wifi.

Your Netgear may well be a better product than the
Home Hub I don't know, but I rather suspect the
word Hub is being used in a general 'centre of things'
sense rather than its strict networking terminology
sense.

I appreciate your reply and after looking at the installation guide for the
Home Hub it does say it is a DECT base unit and it allows an ordinary phone
to be used for the VoIP interface too.

I have not got round to trying it out as I am using my Netgear modem/router
which I believe is better for my networking as I have full control over the
advanced features I need.

I can now re-phrase my question. Is there any way I can use my Netgear unit
to control my network and downgrade the BT Hub to only work as a VoIP
interface on my Netgear controlled network. Presumably on the BT unit I
would want to disable DHCP, NAT and internet access via the modem port and
use it purely as a DECT base station. Could it be plugged into my existing
network via an Ethernet port and go through the Netgear gateway to the
outside world.

May be it is not worth trying but if anybody has any ideas then I would like
to hear from them

Thanks

Graham

Default Re: Can I Connect my BT Hub Phone to my Netgear DG834PN Router

I appreciate the advice given so far but I am getting stuck again.

I have used the various links given in this thread but cannot get the VoIP
working. I spoke to a "helpful" and enthusiastic BT Talk support man who
told me it could be done from another router but he said I had to check if
it was VoIP enabled. I am using a Netgear DG834PN but do not know if this is
VoIP enabled.

He gave me a list of settings such as Registrar btsip.bt.com , registrar
port 5060, Proxy sip.btsip.bt.net etc but none of these are available on my
Netgear setup page.

I thought all I had to do was to get the BT Home Hub working in fixed IP
addressing on my main network so it is visible, disable its Wireless
interface to reduce security risks if not needed, activate the Broadband
Talk account and it should work. I just want to use my Home Hub as a VoIP
interface to the cordless handset they provided.

Does anyone know if this will work or will my Netgear modem not support the
facility in the way I have described.

Thanks

Graham

A further thought

I assume I also have to forward port 5060 (for UDP/TCP) to the fixed IP
address that I have assigned to my BT Home Hub as I have read somewhere that
the VoIP SIP protocol run on top of UDP/TCP and port 5060 is correct for the
BT implementation.

When I get to the Configure Equipment bit of activating the BT service I get
a message saying IE cannot display the page.

I don't think it is, very few routers are, make sure....

Why would you want to use BT for VoIP ? They even charge rental !

Martin

My thoughts exactly.
To the OP, You wont find many people in this group using mainstream
services like BTBBV and Vonage, they cost too much.
Unless you can unlock that Home Hub, I suggest you get a different ATA
and connect a regular DECT base to it (which you probably
already possess) and then you can use the really cheap
providers like the Betamax clones.

I take your point about BT not being very good, but I have upgraded my ISP
account to their 18 month unlimited broadband account and at the time they
were throwing in a free BT Home Hub unit with VoIP and I was only planning
to use their free 200 minutes per month (without any extra rental) with the
kit I was given. I do not want to downgrade my modem/router by using theirs
as I have set up other facilities on my Netgear unit and was hoping to use
both together without buying a separate ATA.

I will look at the other offerings you tell me of. I already have a
commitment to ISDN for other reasons so am not ready to move over to VoIP
for all my telephony requirements.

Thanks

Graham
