I'm not sure you'll find any for Sudan... telecoms is still heavily state
regulated. While there are a few VSPs in Sudan I don't think they have too
many links to the PSTN. I got the impression much backhaul was still
analogue telecoms over copper pairs, though there's been a fair ADSL rollout
recently (in Khartoum anyway) so this might have changed.

Here's the statistics of companies active in Sudanese telecoms:
http://www.ntc.org.sd/index.php?page...ng=eng&pid=153
Not a lot as you can see...

If you do find anything I'd be most interested. Out of interest do you have
any recommendations for VOIP providers to call the Sudanese PSTN? I have a
few UK dialthrough numbers which work, but they're low on capacity and many
others have quality issues (current favourite is 0871 999 1414 which is good
quality but it runs out of capacity in the late afternoon GMT).

Unfortunately many companies advertise all worldwide destinations, but they
buy their PSTN connections in bulk from a third party. So there's no
indication from the list who it's actually being terminated through. Many,
many dialthrough numbers have quality problems - once I started at the top
of one such list trying every number and got to the bottom without getting a
decent connection. BT, on the other hand, at 82p/min was crystal clear and
got through every time. Things have improved recently, and at least the
advantage of dialthroughs is you can try them for little outlay. The same
isn't true of VOIP because the 'free trial' calls are usually those to
destinations where there are no quality problems!

I've just been trying voipcheap.com for Sudan - two poor then dropped
connections, and then the third got through and was acceptable (to a Mobitel
mobile). That's not really good enough so I'm still looking for a decent
VSP...

Sipgate quote 20.8p/min for Sudan, both landline and mobile. Not knowing
anyone there, I've got no way of knowing whether it's any good or not, but
it's a lot cheaper than 82p/min..!

That indeed is the problem - unfortunately 'expensive' doesn't mean 'good'.
I was quite interested in voiptalk.org's Gold service - about 28p/min but
they claim a 'business quality' connection. But there's still no guarantee
it'll be any better as Sudan is hardly a popular destination. But even BT
beats the state telecom operator's outgoing call rate of US$7/min...

Someone from this group has offered me a few trial calls with Magrathea (as
used by Gradwell, Sipgate, etc) to test out his system so (if he's happy for
me to do so) I'll report back how I get on.

We have different packages for different customers. Some of our customers take
our 'gold' routed service, and the vast majority of these calls are carried for
us by BT, so if you can find one that repackages this service then you'll get
the same as BT offers.

Linus

(We have a retail callthrough service that works on this routing service if you
are interested - try www.it-always-works.com)

Thanks - that's very useful to know. Do you have just the two levels of
routing (as implied by http://www.magrathea-telecom.co.uk/termination.htm),
or are there more options that can be selected by the customer?

Is it right that callthrough.co.uk is based on the 'standard' routing
service?

We can always be flexible depending on requirement.
