Default Ebay PAP2T-NA

QRZ uk.telecom.voip?
No posts for nearly two weeks, use it or lose it and all that.

I noticed there are a lot of Hong Kong sellers offering unlocked PAP2 ATAs for
around GBP17 including postage.

I thought that was a very good price when you conceder I bought a Vonage locked PAP2 from Comet about 5 years
ago for GBP20, and I has to unlock it myself with warezware.

I needed one for my daughter, so I ordered one for 17.65 and received it today, just 12 days later.
I was presently surprised to receive a UK type PSU so I don't even need a plug adapter.

No RJ11-BT adapters, and no instructions as to how to access the web interface,
neither is a particular problem for me, but could be for a beginner.

A colleague bought one off eBay from HongKong (I think).
It quit after about 2 months use on Poivy.
Suspect it was originally a "VOIP sevice provider's" unit.
Then it called home.
And home said "you've been palying away, so I'm grounding you for
good".
Any escape possible ?

I'm surprised it worked at all if it was actually locked. A factory reset
*ought* to wipe everything, so worth a try.

- connect an analogue phone to one of the phone ports (port 1 for
preference)
- power up the PAP2T and give it a few seconds to sort itself out
- lift the phone and dial **** (four stars in quick succession)
- you should get a configuration menu
- dial 73738 followed bv #
- dial 1 to confirm
- when you hear 'options successful' hang up and let it reboot

Thanks for the heads up. I already have an SPA-2000 and an SPA-8000, but
could do with two more lines. I like the Linksys units as it's easy to
buld a configuration offline and then load it into the unit. I've ordered
one...at that price, worth a punt.

Someone was flooding the NG with links to the sort of **** that would
get you very quickly locked up if you followed them. (Judging by the
'Subject:' lines, which I can assure you was all I looked at).

You might not have seen it if you or your ISP have some kind of filter
in place.
For myself, I was a little worried that officaldom might not know the
difference between a newsfeed which automatically collects all new
uk.telecom.voip articles for off-line reading, and a deliberate attempt
to access articles containing links to such sites.

Perhaps the whole NG got blocked somewhere until someone noticed
that the articles weren't themselves pictures but links to illegal ****
sites.

I wonder if the people posting the flood of **** links were people who
don't like VOIP and want to scare everyone away from anything to do
with it.

BT, then. They're getting desperate...call prices up again!

Glad I don't have a telephone line!

The ****/spam links are on all the telecoms newsgroups afaik. I have most
of this rubbish filtered. I just have to lock out the new ones when they
arise.

I got an SPA-3000 from HK. The first one had no voice interface and I
couldn't access the web server either. I had to send it back to mainland
China at my expense. After some shenanigans I was sent another. That one
worked though it was impossible to update the firmware. Recently the
voice interface on it has failed so it is important to remember what
static IP I have set it to.

That wasn't what I said. I said I could build a configuration offline and
then load it into the unit. AFAIK, that capability is common to all of
those units...it works on a relatively old SPA-2000. You just need to
build the XML file, put it on a TFTP server and point the unit at it.

You cannot backup and restore.

Except he doesn't actually *know* if his program works for an SPA-2000,
and he doesn't even mention the SPA-8000. And you have to remove the
admin password to use it.

Perhaps I should have said 'there is no known-to-work-and-be-reliable way
of backing up and restoring provided by the manufacturer'...!

I see that he has sold quite a few, no feedback on these as yet.

Delivery 13-25 days seems to be a long time for German post, that time
scale I would say is normal for China/Hong Kong.

Also if they are brand new, why do they need a factory reset ?

Yes, I wonder if they are shipping in bulk from there!

I would imagine they are new, but pre-provisioned for use by an ITSP.

Got mine from amazon with free super save delivery(!) a few weeks ago. It was
only £24 or thereabouts. Looking on there today it looks like they are more
expensive though.

There is nothing magic about backing up an SPA. You don't need a special
program. All you do is save the 'page' via your web browser like you
would save any web page. That will save the configuration. Then to make
the saved file suitable to recover the settings you need to do:-

1. Change the line in the file that will say something like:-
<form action="http://your.spa-3000.ip.address/admin/asipura.spa"
method="post">
Replace "your.spa3102.ip.address" with the IP of your SPA. You can use a
text editor like Gedit, Notepad etc. to do this.

2.Bring up the modified page up in your browser. Enter your username and
password in the 'System' tab.
On the 'Line 1' tab enter your voip credentials: 'Display Name',UserID
and password.
Save the page again. Check all is OK.
Now you can use your page to recover the settings.
To do this just click 'Submit all changes' and your SPA should be updated.
OK, I've done this for the SPA-3000 but it will be very similar on other
SPAs.
______________
A word about 'from HK' Ebay sales. I got an SPA-3000 this way. It was
faulty. I had to stand the post to send it back, not to HK, but to an
address China. Eventually, after some exchange of dialogue, I was sent
another. It worked but I found that I couldn't update the firmware. Since
then the voice info. has failed so it is impossible to find out the IP if
you are on DHCP (which I never use anyway). So I have to remember what IP
I set it to. Further, I am not convinced that it is a bona-fide Linksys
device. I think that it could be a Chinese copy. The build quality of the
case is not as I would have expected. It works but overall I have
reservations about dealing again with HK.
