We were thinking of signing up to this service as it seems so cheap but
am i correct in thinking it is owned by the Dixons retail group,if so
are they reliable in terms of service.
Also i was just on the verge of signing up for a sipgate local number
but after reading the bad press on here by a poster calling himslef
dexter and also after reading about the outage today i think we will be
fogetting them.
Anyway what are your opinions of Freetalk, do you know anyone who is
actually using the service yet?
Any comments welcome from all you knowledgable folk

Don't make judgements purely on the opinions of one person. Dexter is well
known on this group for his dislike (verging on hatred it seems to me) of
Sipgate, he has had a bad experience which by no means mirrors the level
of service experienced by the majority.
The outage today lasted for a total of five minutes, hardly enough to
warrant not even trying the service. It is free after all, there is no
monthly charge unlike most of the others, you only pay for calls to the
PSTN.

Well it's only been running a few days so I expect it will take a while
for user reports to filter through, but the £6.99 a month means I won't be
trying it.

Dexter, if someone wants me to use their system they are going to have to
let me try it out without wasting money.
*If* once I've tried it I like it, then I *might* just possibly be
convinced to pay for continuing service, but to have to shell out just to
try it..? No chance, I work hard for my money and I have no intention of
wasting it.

If you try the Freetalk monthly plan it comes with a 14 day trial
(with conditions of course)

Hmm, well that's something I suppose, but looking at their site it seems
to me I still have to use their ATA..? I have a spare port on one of my
own, what if I want to use that..?

I don't think Dexter is being a troll. I fully agree. I will not try a
VOIP service that i have to pay upfront for - but thats simply because i
want the flexability to use different services and so pay for calls only.
The comment Dexter mean't about free trials is completly valid. Are
they exmempt because they are not a developing technology?

Yes you can, 0800 numbers. Plenty of those about to try.

Why not..? People who set up 0800 numbers presumably want people to call
them and are therefore prepared to pay for it.

Yes, of course I did. One of the things pointed out on the Sipgate site is
that calls to 0800 numbers can be made as part of the test to see if the
service is suitable for you.

I would hardly set up an 0800 number if I wasn't prepared to pay for it,
now would I..?
Who knows, such a call might end up generating the company concerned
business. I would hazard a guess that most companies who use 0800 numbers
factor in a percentage of wasted calls into their costs.
