I have just realised that I have two Siemens VOIP phone installations
that can use gigaset.net, therefore I should be able to talk from one
to the other.
However I can't work out how one actually makes a call using
gigaset.net and their website tells me nothing useful at all.
Can someone tell me how one actually makes a call using gigaset.net?

Not tried it, but page 43 (actual page 46) of this PDF may help?

According to the manual, you select gigaset.net which is line #9 on my
A580IP. Then you need to search for the persons registered nickname,
select it and press the call key. After that it is like a normal VOIP
call. I've tried it once or twice and it works OK.
Some people have reported poor audio quality on gigaset.net but I
haven't used it enough to comment.

Thanks, though this is basically the information I had already. I did
eventually fathom out how to make a call, the issue was that it isn't
made clear anywhere (well, to me anyway) where/how you find your
gigaset number. It's all very well finding someone in the gigaset.net
directory and calling them - but if you haven't put yourself into that
directory you can't be found and called.
Finding one's number is the difficult bit, and yet again I can't work
out how to do that. The gigaset.net website is wholly useless on that
front.
There's no clue on the base station configuration either.

Yes, easy, once you have registered you number against a nickname in
the gigaset.net directory. The problem is that I can't work out what
my gigaset.net number is, nor how to put that number into the
directory.

.... and I've eventually found it again, in the Settings->Info Services
section of the base station web configuration there's:-
For authentication, please use
username:222222222222#9
password:xxxxxxxx
That username is the gigaset.net number to call.

Seemed reasonably OK to us, via a decidedly poor bandwidth 3G (well,
2G in reality) connection.

It's not well thoughtout IMHO. It might be of use to us at some time
in the future as we have a house in UK and one abroad, both with VOIP.
So far we have been using a VOIP provider which gives free 'on
network' calls.
Gigaset.net isn't as easy for SWMBO, although I guess you could load
it into the phonebook. Not tried though.

For a family of phones providing SIP they make it practically
impossible to handle IP addresses as "phone numbers" - Especially
where one needs a number as well as the IP. 123.123.123.123/123456 for
example. I have an old unused ATA that could do *much* better.

I was hoping to set up 'proper' VOIP but, at the moment anyway, that's
suffering from 'one way audio' whereas the gigaset.net connection
works pretty well. The 'one way audio' is probably due to the
internet connection at one end being through 3G.

Yes, just put the 222222222222#9 number there I think.

Hi,
As mentioned - The number of the phone is under Settings|Info Services
on the phone base station.
Meanwhile, at the uk.telecom.voip Job Justification Hearings, tinnews@isbd.co.uk chose the tried and tested strategy of:

How about a polite email to Siemens? You never know, they might just update
their website based on consumer feedback. Bit of long shot for a
multinational conglomerate, but nothing ventured, nothing gained, eh?

Aside from all the other tips. I have played with gigaset.net and had
terrible results (audio quality). Then after a quick mail to siemans
they quickly resloved the audio issue as follows:
"Regarding your query about the poor sound quality S 685 IP, we
recommend that you should change the audio codecs through the web
interface of the phone (Settings --> Telephony --> Audio), and set G711µ
as the first codec in the list. If this doesn't seem to be successful,
we advise that you should remove all of the codecs (after removal they
should appear in the list on the right side) and then add them back, one
at a time (and check how the connection works with each one of them).
We are confident that your concerns will be resolved shortly and wish
you a good day."
I removed all codecs and then added just G722 for HDSP to the gigaset
entry (which is what I was questioning) and all was fine. I was also
able to add a few other codecs and calls were also of a "Hi-Fi HDSP "
nature.
As for using the gigaset.net tel.dir select gigaset.net on the handset
from directory then dial and search for registered nickname (or
add/change your own). Pretty pointless really though but I set up
GymRatZ.co.uk for the shop which comes up on a search for "gym"
Or simply add the number and suffix(?) into phone book entry.
You can add IP address into phone book entry too simply entered (in my
case as 172*16*1*1:5070 (which dials home over VPN and goest to port
5070 on gigaset box as it's changed from the default 5060.
I have also set up to dial home public IP address without the :5070 as
firewall port-forwards. Nothing stopping you having several variations
listed on same address book entry.
Works for me and gigaset.net number sorts out non-static IP address issues.
Do this: DIAL Gigaset.net directory: by entering the number 1188#9
you click 'OPTIONS' (right navigation button)
you see:
-Search
-Own details <- select
you THEN see your Gigaset.net number, AND have the ability to CHANGE your nickname on the gigaset.net directory as many times s you like (unless it's already used)
This question asked by mr. Green is absolutely legitimate: it is NOT obvious anywhere that you should fo this in order to set your nickname (as it's NOT possible by logging into gigaset.net with a browser, EVEN IF you's have found your gigaset 2xxxxxx#9 number listed on the configuration page of the phone, and no not everyone has a computer and is savvy to login to their gigaset base, BUT EVEN IF YOU DO: it's impossible from there to change your nickname once you have set it!
(tell me where you find THAT in the manual! *just checked C610 IP manual, 1188 or gigaset.net are NOT in there!)
regarding opening a 'browser like' non phonecall by 'dialing' a seemingly random 4 digit number plus #9 (same for the yellow pages) baffles me.
WHY is a TEXT based function not found in the menu under 'services' or such, and especially one that configures an crucial setting that makes your phone work (as i haven'e found out a way to translate the gigaset number into a sip uri such as sip: 22687688@gigaset.net as to allow others to call me any OTHER way then going into the gigaset directory by dialing 1188#9 and looking for my nickname, other then telling people my number on gigaset is 22687688#9 which doesn't make sense to most peopple either, but indeed might be the way to go..
the browser like interaction you get after pressing the green call button and entering 1188#9, has NOTHING to do with 'calling', talking to a person or otherwise resembles making a phone call it feels more like changing a configuration setting that SHOULD haved been added into the menu.
Note: some people get others to configure their base for them and themselves have no idea how to login to their base settings OTHER than using their handset. Gigaset knows this and acknowledges this by making most important setting accesible from the handset. and... in this case, CHANGING the nickname is ONLY possible this way! (as in the 192.168.1.x then: settings under 'info services you only find the nickname you already registered (if you FORGOT to WRITE DOWN ON A PAPER your 22765976 gigaset.net number of the base which showed up there BEFORE you registered a nickname, as AFTER registering a nickname: IT'S GONE!
ok enough for my rant.... i don"t think it;s clear at all and i AM computer savvy! (and the 6 month don;t use the service and you are out small print sucks too!)
PS: bonus for anyone explaining how i can get the phone ringing on the gigaset registration by dialling an 'xxx@sip.gigaset.net' like sip uri?
oh i forgot: ofcourse many people l (like me) delete preset entries on a phone (eg... the check voicemail and chack balance entries on a simcard)
/so i deleted the 'yellow pages' ang gigaset.net entry on the phone, not knowing it is used to actually configure your nickname! finding this out is not easy! dial 1188#9 to change your nickname? forget it! it's not in the handbook.
