Sipgate to Sipgate calls are also free, so if whoever you want to call or
who calls you has one it's completely free both ways. Of course this
applies to other VoIP suppliers, before the trolls jump on me.

See above. Note that you need a UK IP address to register a normal
geographic number, so do it before you leave..!

For a list of suppliers have a look here
How much would sipgate cost? Is there a "rental" type cost per month ? Any
specialist routers needed ?
The UK end would have only a BT line.. no PC there.

I've only done it once, and it was free for calling the PSTN number (got
translatesd to the SIP ID number on the bill).

Cost to you? New Zealand to the UK tariff? Consult their website.
If by 'rental' you mean some sort of standing charge, there is none.
Again, consult their website.
Any type of router is suitable.

Choose one of the UK PSTN numbers offered on Sipgate's website. The UK
end phones you from their BT/TalkTalk/cable/mobile etc line at whatever
rate prevails for a call to that number. No PC is needed.

Both. In fact you have to dial the full PSTN number if the SIP ID's are on
different domains, i.e. German <> UK.

I have and I know it isn't working. You can't call several providers from
FWD at the moment, not just Sipgate.

It's a FWD problem not Sipgate. Try calling from FWD to other providers as
well.
