Default Port to PSTN

Hi there

I currently have a sipgate VoIP account. My adsl connection is not the greatest, and I am experiencing quality issues, particularly if I try to browse the web at the same time.

I would like to port my 0845 number to a regular PSTN service. However, sipgate's carrier, Magrathea Telecom, only provide VoIP services, and they do not have porting agreements with other suppliers.

Anyone have any bright ideas as to how I can keep the 0845 number (it's a business number and I don't want to change it unless there is no other option). I realise that I could port over to a VoIP provider that has call forwarding, but then I am paying rental for the number and the call charge associated with the forwarding.

I'd be grateful for any ideas.

you could

1) Get a router that will hold decent line sync and also buy a Qos box
(plug -
http://www.provoip.co.uk/product_inf...roducts_id=103
although that is a slightly more corporate product )

2) Port the number a voip provider who does call forwarding, and just
leave a permanent divert to a landline number. You will pay for your
inbound calls, but maybe you can make up for this by having the voip
provider queue calls or ring your mobile if you don't answer the landline.

Which ISP are you on? The connection has to be fairly shocking for
simple web browsing to significantly affect call quality. Especially
on the downline side.

If I wasn't such a nice guy, I might have said to you that it serves you
right for expecting your customers to pay premium rate** to do
business with you, and with no real advantage to yourself over
a normal geographic number.

**perhaps not in telecom terms but certainly as a dictionary
definition of "premium", as it almost invariably will cost more to dial.

'corse I am far too nice a guy to mention any of that.

If your ADSL is only managing 160kb/sec, it should easily be good enough
for decent VOIP (I know because one of our offices was only getting that
rate on the ADSL and VOIP still worked fine).

You need to set up the QoS parameters so that the VOIP gets the first
call on bandwidth.

I would like to ban bloody 0845 numbers. We still have one for
portability reasons, but now we use VOIP there is no reason to continue
with it. I'd certainly not bother porting it anywhere. Get yourself a
proper geographical number and dump the 0845.

I don't know where you got that idea from, we do just as much business in the
TDM world as VoIP! If you send an email to support@magrathea-telecom.co.uk
outlining your problem we'll be able to advise you.
