Default Say No to 0870

As many VOIP providers charge silly amounts for non-geographical
numbers it is useful to know the normal number as well.

I said to my insurance company that I wouldn't continue using
them unless they gave me a geographic number to use to phone
them. They said they didn't have one, but gave me an 0800 number
instead !

More people should make it clear they won't deal with companies
using 0870 numbers. With just a small amount of momentum, the
effect could very quickly snowball, and we'd see 0870 numbers
disappearing as companies realised they put people off from
doing business with them.

You read my post wrong.

Yes they could block google ads completely - they won't do this as this is
their revenue stream, and why would they block something they are adding to
their site themselves to help pay their costs?

What they can't do is block individual ads, for example they can't block ads
that sell 0870 numbers, and allow other ads through.

Is it *really* costing that much to host the site? It may well be that
the ads are making such a mockery of the content of the site that the
revenue doesn't compensate.

I believe you may ask Google not to offer particular types of ads that
are inappropriate to your site content.

That's quite cynical, is it not?

Google ads chooses "relevant" adverts to display based on the content of
the website. It's all done automatically from keywords in the web page.
In this case, Google sees "0870" all over the web site, so it isn't
surprising that it picks the adverts it does as the most relevant.

It's just a flaw in their algorithm, computers can't easily tell the
difference between a pro-0870 site and an anti-0870 site.

Steve.

so a pro-life site would get splattered with ads for abortion clinics.
ROFL.

There is no flaw in the algorithm. There is a flaw in the management of the
links on the part of the site owner. A client of mine runs a travel site
relating to London, England and can explicitly exclude links related to
London, Ontario.

I understand that it is very simple when setting up the google ads to place
"-0870" as a negative keyword [i.e.: do not show "0870" related links]
however I imagine that, in this instance, Google would have very few related
ads to serve!

Never done it myself, though....
