Is there any different between Sipgate and Voipfone?
What I want: a geographic number and the ability to transfer calls.
Voipfone has a lot of other features... but for now I'd like to go for
the free one.

Dexter has an issue with Sipgate in that he was unhappy with their
service. He is no longer a customer so IMHO is no longer qualified to
comment.
Sipgate is perfectly ok for most people, however Dexter and one or two
others will tell you I promote them due to a personal interest. While I do
have a *personal* interest in how the company performs, I am not in any
way financially connected to them, nor am I employed by them. I recommend
them because I am happy with their service. Dexter isn't so he will try
and tell you otherwise.
I strongly urge you to listen to *nobody*, not even me when it comes to
how the service performs *for you*, which after all is the bottom line,
and make up your own mind.
> Is there any different between Sipgate and Voipfone?
I suggest trying both and seeing what works best for you.
I've had no problems with Sipgate after I got my Asterisk config and
firewall rules ironed out. I found it useful to be able to experiment
with my setup and get everything straight before buying any credit.
Haven't tried Voipfone.
I believe Voipfone have many more features than Sipgate, and they appear to
be more reliable. I started with Sipgate and when it stopped working, I
moved to Voipfone.
The rates also on Voipfone look cheaper.

personally i don't think there is any comparison here Voipfone are far
superior they have loads of features and they all work they seem to add
new features almost weekly and they listen to what their customers want
i have no hesitation in recommending them

Give Sipgate a try, I've not had any big problems with them, only 1 or 2 minor
outages.
Early each day to the steps of Saint Paul's
The little old bird woman comes.
In her own special way to the people she calls,
"Come, buy my bags full of crumbs.
Come feed the little trolls, show them you care
And you'll be glad if you do.
Their young ones are hungry,
Their nests are so bare;
All it takes is tuppence from you."
Feed the trolls, tuppence a bag,
Tuppence, tuppence, tuppence a bag.
"Feed the trolls," that's what she cries,
While overhead, her trolls fill the skies.
All around the cathedral the saints and apostles
Look down as she sells her wares.
Although you can't see it, you know they are smiling
Each time someone shows that he cares.
Though her words are simple and few,
Listen, listen, she's calling to you:
"Feed the trolls, tuppence a bag,
Tuppence, tuppence, tuppence a bag."
With apologies to Julie Andrews

They charge £1.99 a month for a geographic number though, and I still
can't make head nor tail of their website..! I don't make all that many
chargeable calls on Sipgate, most of the people I call are either also on
it or another network that has peering, so the PSTN rates are less
important to me than some.

Indeed, Ian, but what would you do in my place..? Do you really think I
*like* the current situation on the group..? Don't forget I proposed its
creation, I didn't do that to set myself up as a pariah.
I have had untrue and unsubstantiated allegations made against me, do I
just sit back and let others believe them..? Not *one shred* of proof has
ever been revealed about my so-called "links" with Sipgate, nor, I
suspect, will they ever be, but meanwhile I am supposed to stand by while
at least two individuals knock me down every time I say anything about
Sipgate..? I don't think so.
Other people are constanly on about how wonderful they think Vonage and
Voipfone are, you don't see me accusing them of being employed by them.

Don't feed the trolls especially the kids.
You are your own worst enemy. Whenever something is said about Sipgate
or you, DO NOT respond. The sensible people on this group know what
these kids are like and just ignore their comments; you should too. If
you don't, the attacks will continue.

A valid comment, but as Sipgate is the only provider I have experience of
(apart from a brief encounter with FWD) I am not qualified to comment on
any other, which if I can't say anything about it rather negates my
usefulness here somewhat. Why shouldn't I give information and advice on
what I know most about..? It's not my fault if others don't like it or
read something into what I say that isn't true.
Ivor - you are just as qualified as any of us ( me thinks) - just don't
let the kids rile you. Their comments expose themselves for what they
are, and no-one thinks any worse of you, if you do not reply to them.
The advantage of that is that the threads can then focus on the issue
at hand, rather than all the mud slinging.

A good point, thanks. I'll do my best..! The problem is, as soon as I
mention the name Sipgate, even just to post what they themselves said on
their website, I get jumped on by the usual culprits.
>which if I can't say anything about it rather negates my

you could get another service to expand your experience base.
or consider only replying to postings that go unanswered for an hour
or two. Just try to avoid looking like a "Sipgate is fine here" script
application.

No, the whole problem is that you don't treat everyone on the group
equally. I mustn't mention Sipgate but you can mention Vonage, Voipfone or
whoever with impunity. I don't slag you off for that, everyone is entitled
to their opinion, me as well as you.
You are a tool in their hands !!! What fun is there in abusing you if
you do not reply ? huh ?? Please, again, no-one thinks any worse of you
if you do not reply - rather the opposite. Take a walk around the
block, breathe some air - BUT PLEASE PLEASE DONT REPLY, otherwise this
will never stop. It's a bunch of kids pissing on your doorstep - ignore
it, and they will get fed up and find themselves some other useless
pastime. What do you have to lose by trying ?

I agree, and I *will* try, but you have only told me what *I* should do,
now please tell them what *they* should do.
Nay - I have politely suggested to you (ahem..begged) a different
course of action, since I believe you can be reasoned with.
With kids you cannot reason - you can only educate them by example:
your own actions. I'd wish they would go and stuff themselves, but
arguing with such gits is a rather pointless undertaking - as
exemplified by the last few months in this group.
I sincerely hope other readers take notice - and simply ignore these
brats. Let them be invisible - unfortunately the only punishment we
can inflict upon them, but it might work:)

I hope so too, but my patience is wearing thin.

True, but sitting still with my mouth shut when I am being shouted at on
all sides is not an easy task and I'm not sure I'm up to it any more.

Indeed. But sometimes if, in the normal course of events, someone asks
about Sipgate and I happen to know the answer, am I to say nothing just in
case I get blasted for mentioning the "S" word..? I have little experience
of other providers, if I am to be any use at all in this group it is
answering questions on Sipgate. Should I not do this..? Makes me feel
rather useless.

I'm causing problems by answering questions..? Why is that..? This isn't a
competition, the "S" word versus the "V" word, it's a discussion area
where people can (or are supposed to) get answers to questions.
You like Vonage's service, that's good. Put it to good use by helping
people when they ask questions about Vonage, let me do the same with
Sipgate. That way both of us can get on with what this group is supposed
to be about rather than slagging one another off.
