I've not seen anyone mention on here they use Tesco VoIP, though someone may
pop along eventually.
It's usually one avoided due to being one of the dearest VoIP providers
along with Skype.

I see you're using Virginmedia as your ISP.
The connection speeds are up & down like
a fiddlers elbow tonight with this provider.
I guess that might be the root of your problem

Well I live in the Croydon area and have Virgin media 2 megs I run 2
desktops and 2 laptops plus a ata for my voip calls, no telephone line
from Virgin and the wife was on the phone for a hour for free without
any problems, could be problems if using online music and video at the
same time!

Virgin refused (the past ohhh, hundred or so times) to unbundle my phone
line from the broadband.. I get seperate bills (actually the broadband bills
dont come more than one or two times a year!!!!) but they say that having
the phone is a requirement of having the broadband due to internal policys
:/....
I am a ex-CW user but I would be interested if this is something new you got
there ;)..

I had broadband and TV without phoneline, this was xTelewest and through to
Virgin. I was VoIP only for a couple of years, before I had BT landline as
cable phone was too expensive. I only have had the phone line installed
recently as Virgin offered free install, free extension, free line rental,
free evening and weekend calls and free caller display along with reduced
cost TV, I had previously had a deal for the last two years but they
wouldn't extend that further, yet offered me a better package discounted.
Friends and relatives have broadband only, no other service have also done
for a few years. Though again these are all xTelewest customers.

I had similar with NTL .. they wouldn't upgrade my BB less I went DD
(and I wouldn't). Then they upgraded me for free. ;-)

I have recently had VM drop the phone and the TV from my package and
they did so without an issue.

Thanks for all the replies people - I ended up phoning the Tesco support
line and they were very helpful. For future reference, my problem was that
the IPA 1000 didn't have the server address in its config -
gateway.tescointernetphone.com is the correct one.
Its all working great now.

Ah, hello Ron, wondered where you'd got to. In answer to your question,
Vonage don't supply anything for free, they charge you a whopping monthly

Sipgate, on the other hand (since *you* mentioned them, I didn't) don't
charge for numbers, you only pay for calls made.

Tell the full story, Jon. Orange charge for an operation that most if not
all other operators don't. Why should I pay for something that is free
elsewhere..? The amount is irrelevant. And please explain how the charge
could be *less* than 1p without being zero.

(a) Please cite *proof* that Sipgate (you do mean them when you say "they"

(b) They do not masquerade as a UK based company, nothing on their site
says this, the contact details page clearly states where they are based.
I really despair about you, Ron. Only you could turn a debate about Tesco
into a rant against a company you aren't even a customer of.

Let's look at the facts, shall we?
UK DDI
Sipgate, 0 quid for the >2 years I've had it
Skype, 29 USD a year
Voicemail
Sipgate, 0 quid for the >2 years I've had it
Skype, 15 EUR a year
Calls to UK geographic
Sipgate, 1.19p/minute
Skype, 1.4p/minute
You can't seriously be suggesting that is 'the same', although your
sobriquet is 'ignore the facts', so who knows.
And a little addendum, Skype will wipe any SkypeOut credit you buy if you
don't use the service often enough, a 'feature' that Sipgate fortunately
haven't adopted.

Than 'certain' voip set ups. This may well be correct but users of SIP
services have the option to move to any of the hundreds of competitors
without changing hardware or software. With Skype you have just Skype,
It is a walled garden. The success of Skype is because anyone, with
just basic computer skills, can install it and it works. It does what
it does fairly well. Had the Gizmo project been operational, before
Skype, and given the same publiclity, it most likely would have have
seen Skype off.
Now the new Skype phone is out, at an affordable price, I am sure it
will be a sucess as the majority of Skype users think that Skype is
unique in the provision of over-the-net telephone calls.
Meanwhile, on SIP....
I can ask people at the other side of the world to install Gizmo on
their computer and they can then call direct to my home phone for
free. Alternatively, they can call into their local Sipbroker access
number and call me that way as an alternative to paying for an
international call.
I can call any landline in Australia, untimed, for 4p/call. I can
call many international destinations, for 8p an hour and, of course, I
can call into the many hundreds of SIP providers, for free, via
Sipbroker. No monthly fees involved in any of this. I can call to my
voicemail, from many countries, for the price of a local call.
Similarly I can call other SIP phones, anywhere, from my mobile, or
otherwise, via a local call. I can decide at what time I want to
receive my calls and when they should be directed to voicemail or
another number. I can do callback using my own chosen providers. The
list is endless. However, I do recognise that some of these services
are not easily attainable, by the average 'Joe', so a simpler, but
more expensive, Skype wins out.

Having been involved in 'the Web' since before it existed, .com is very
clearly generally taken to mean 'business' or even just generic 'website'
- nothing to do with 'US based'.
..co.uk, however is intended for UK businesses or UK branches of
