Looking on the Voipfone website, without registering, I found it difficult
to be sure whether there is or is not any monthly fee - if you make no
calls, or whether the service is in this respect free. Could someone briefly
summarise for me which of these VoIP service providers do not charge any
monthly fee?

You are getting confused with old service providers who charge
monthly fees.
New providers like Voipfone, there are no monthly fees.
Other more modern service providers have no accounts either
and charge 10%-20% extra for standard analogue phone (non-VoIP) calls
compared to VoIP calls.

You can sign up with voipfone for free (no monthly fee) they give you a
few free minutes and sms to try things out then if your still happy you
just top up your account with credit they do have a few services that
are charged monthly but the basic service is pay as you go

Thanks. Looking at the voipfone charges, For 0845, 0870, mobile calls and
international calls it is possible to beat these prices using a combination
of the BT or Cable plus calling cards It is then a question of how long the
calls are and their volume to see if or what saving one can achieve mainly
due to not paying for the monthly rental. For very high volumes/call
durations you may be better of with the old analog line.

I was looking at their site but I couldn't see where you can select a
phone number or what format it is.
Is it an ordinary geographic one as with Sipgate or is it one of those 05
numbers that probably cost extra to call from the PSTN..?

Post the url.
Probably services other than VoIP.
For VoIP you just set account up and pay some money into the pot
in advance so that you can make phone calls and the money gets
taken out the pot.

No. Gradwell is a business-oriented system, Peter Gradwell who runs it
posts on this group from time to time. The url is www.gradwell.co.uk
It is, from what I've seen, an excellent service, but the monthly charge
is too much for my purposes.

It is said there that calls to 05 number are the same as to
any "ordinary tel. number". It does not mention whether you
can also have a local geographic number, only 0870 number

In my first example it was probably a reference to a specific package
that already includes some free minutes, as you suggested. The second
example seems true irreducible monthly fee, see http://www.gradwell.co.uk/voip/trial.php

To be fair monthly charge is still less than half of BT or NTL, so if it is
a quality, reliable service to the level of analog BT or NTL line then
it would be worth having, particularly for a small business

But a lot of people on NTL cannot dial 056 numbers, due to NTL refusing to
enable them on some exchanges. This makes the use of 056 numbers very
unreliable, and it also affects BT customers who have an 056 number, because
they will not be reachable from a lot of NTL customers.

Indeed, which is the market I think they aim for, rather than the domestic
customer.
Voipfone lets you choose the things you want from its package builder. http://www.voipfone.co.uk/builder.php
If you click on the text you can see what they do and how much they
cost.
You get an 056 number automatically for free. Calls to 056 from BT
phones are at BT's national calls rates. You can have any number you
like - 0870 is free - others like geographic numbers are charged at
£1.99 per month. Items with an * are charged monthly.
The basic service is pay as you go with no monthly charges.

Like to clear that up?
Are you saying the 056 is charged as an 0870 number, as BT no longer
distinguish between national and local calls.

The last time I looked, BT charges were:-
Calls to 056 numbers are charged at the g21 rate.
Daytime 4.89p per minute
Evening 2p per minute
Weekend 1.18p per minute
All the above include vat.
NTL might have different charges, but that's hard to tell, as I can't even
get them to enable the 056 numbers, let alone find a price for dialling
them, but as some areas can apparently dial 056 numbers from NTL, there must
be a price set somewhere.

Thanks for the clarification. However, if it is correct that NTL users
cannot call 056 numbers that is quite a serious limitation to the use of
these numbers.

On 'BT Together Option 1' 056 is charged as a 01x/02x call - i.e. 3 odd 'p'
during the day, and 5.5p for up to an hour at the weekend. However on Option 2 &
3 they don't give unmetered access, instead continuing the Option '1' pricing -
which is a little disappointing.
There is a 'notional' non-discounted price of something like 4/2/1 - but this
applies to very few lines.
[snip!] - as per my other post, this is actually confusing - you have posted the
non-discount pricing, which doesnt really apply as no residential user, other
than LUS and a few other exception is actually on it. What you are better off
looking at is the [better] BT Together Option 1 pricing from:
We're not quite sure yet what NTL is doing with its 056 implementation;
we're awaiting a reply from them. However, we do know that many of our
(Voipfone) customers use NTL and their 056 number work. But we also
know of at least 2 new customers whose number do not work because NTL
have not so far implemented them.
It's worth pointing out that BT supplies the vast majority of UK
customers and has implemented 056 (as it is obliged to by law - as is
Kingston on Hull).
Of course, if any NTL customers are having problems with 056 they can
take a free 0870 number or a geographical number (£1.99 per month)
until it's resolved.

NTL seemed quite sure what they were doing when I contacted them about 056
numbers, I was told, in no uncertain terms, that NTL were not enabling any
more exchanges to take the numbers.
A 'free' 0870 number becomes expensive for the people that call the number,
and is not a suitable substitute for the rates charged for a 056 number, and
as you point out, a geographical number costs £1.99 per month, which is
£1.99 per month more than a 056 number.

Isn't the real problem numbers that don't begin 01 or 02?
Virtually everything people gripe about on this news group is 08xxxxx
05xxxxx 09xxxxx related.
Why do people want phone numbers that cannot be dialled form abroad / other
telcos
or where the tarif structure is such that you don't know how much a call is
going to cost before you get the bill

That's taking things a bit too far. Companies usually only go as
far as making everything so complicated that it is difficult for their
own customer services staff to understand. :-)
