Just a pity you can't use them via an ATA.
Is there likely to be a particular reason why they operate soft phone
only?

You shouldn't really bother responding to my posts as I have you

Never mind that my day-to-day computer uses neither, nor is it even a
PC, so a warezed copy of Windows wouldn't help.
Also, quaintly, I like to make and receive telephone calls with a
telephone. When you compare my DECT handset (approximate weight 250g)
versus a PC (approximate weight 15kg) I know which one I'd rather pick
up and take to wherever in the house I wish to make or receive calls.

Linux is only crap to those that don't understand it. I use both and
each has their own strengths and weaknesses. Its a case of using the
right tool for the job. e.g. I have Windows on the desktop and Linux as
the server.
Your messages to this newsgroup probably never touched a Windows server
on its way and your newsgroup server is probably a Linux box, so a
"crap" operating system is working rather well for you ;-)

A few quick pokes suggests his news server is probably INN running on
a Linux 2.4 box. His incoming mail server is definitely Exim 4.52,
which implies Unix (so probably Linux again.)

What's a "soft phone" and what's a dect handset?? I just installed
voipcheap a few days ago and it doesn't work. There again all I did was to
install the software, register, log on , and then tried to dial out (to
which I just get a message saying remote computer disconnected). OTOH I
have absolutely no idea what anyone is talking about on this newsgroup.

a soft phone is a software application trying to emulate a telephone
by using a computers CPU and sound facilities.
a DECT handset is a normal cordless digitial phone, plugged into
either a BT line or into an Analogue Telephone Adapter (ATA) which is
if you like an "ethernet to telephone" VoIP converter

XP 64 for a mail server! I wouldn't be overly happy about the corporate
mail on XP 64 either until at least SP1.

A lot of Windows XP SP2 is part of Windows 2003 SP1, the Version of
winsocks is.

What jumping to conclusions? I did this through bog standard network
forensics/diagnostics, and my working is shown at the end of this message.
You may well be using XP internally, but a single-user graphical
shell, while perhaps good enough for your own local needs, is too
expensive and unreliable for the kind of high-volume always-on service
that ISPs provide.
$ nc news.freedom2surf.net 119
502 You have no permission to talk. Goodbye.
That message is identical to that which my own INN2 server gives. (The
message after the 502 is free-form and varies depending on the
software used.)
Therefore I conclude that your news service probably runs on INN or a
close derivative.
TCP fingerprinting was used to guess the OS. It didn't absolutely
confirm the OS, but suggested it was most likely Linux or some sort of
load-balancer. Given that INN is a Unix rather than a Windows
application, this further points to Linux.
I thus conclude that your mail is handled by Exim 4.52.
The results of TCP fingerprinting was inconclusive. However Exim is
also a Unix program, so it is unlikely that this was running on
something Windows-based.

err,
host -t mx blueyonder.co.uk reports that your incoming mail is relayed to
so, the incoming mail server at the email address that you present is as
stated above.
Fingerprinting suggests that this host is likely to be running either
linux or an embedded version of linux.
If blueyonder have a service whereby they forward the email to customers
boxes (which they haven't, much less forward them to other peoples
customers hosts) in the same way that demon used to is another matter.
Since your host doesn't appear to be permanently up, this would be a bad
idea anyway.

Linux is not crap, not by a long way. It is Windows that is the problem.
but then if you want to spend your money on supporting Microcrap, then

I always love this argument and name calling.
If Linux was so bloody good then it would be far more dominant than it
is today.
Face facts - Windows XP and Windows 2003 server are very good
products.

I'm willing to bet it or another Unix variant probably runs on the
majority of internet servers.

For some purposes, not others. They are, IMHO I should add, not as good as
Linux and other Unix variants for server use.

Not slagging off, merely stating opinions. I happen to be very fond of
Novell Netware, but it has suffered at the hands of both Microsoft and
Linux/Unix for network servers over the last few years.
