Again, like Vonage, you'd have to be making a lot of calls to spend
£10.33/month on voip calls. For some people it might be worth it but
not for most.
If you do it properly, using various providers, programmed into your
ATA, you can do lots of calls at cheap prices. I have accounts for
untimed calls. 2p/call to anywhere in Europe & the US, 4p/call to
OZ., 8p/call to many other destinations for up to 1 hour.

Hi Brian,
I am a keen advocate and fan of VoIP and all the myriad providers and
services out there.
Please could you provide some details about some (all?) the providers you
use / recommend or would shortlist, etc.
Particularly, your per call charge operators and any other low priced or
free bundled minutes / unlimited calls package providers you use (or perhaps
know of - in that order preferably!!!).
I know of Vyke and hope I introduced this group to it (or some in this group
to it), but was not aware of some other different rate fixed charge per call
operators (e.g. 4p and 8p per call).

My basic advice is if you want to call to a particular part of the
world then look at VSPs in that area.
For example:
If you want to call OZ mobiles useOZ company pennytel.com
If you want to call Australia landlines and popular international
destinations, such as NZ, choose astratel.com.au
Also, if you can find voip forums, from the area you are calling, you
can get a feel as to which operators to choose. One problem you might
find, as I have just recently, with an OZ company, is that some are
geared up to serving their own country and haven't contemplated a
world market.
In this case, it was impossible for me to fill in the form because it
needed an OZ address, and, if I put in an OZ address, it didn't like
my credit card. I had to phone in and do it all over the phone - not
totally sorted yet.
If you are calling the US then it is always possible to call 1-800
numbers for free over voip and calling some standard landline numbers
can also be free. A US directory enquires service is also available
free. Check out sipbroker.com for all these.

Hi Brian,
Thanks for your input and suggestions.
I think that is very sound and good advice. I think additionally it is a
good idea to regularly scan the broad marketplace offerings as sometimes
unexpected or unusual offerings are available providing excellent value or
service to a destination that is as may be sought particularly domestic or
otherwise relatively specific to a particular region / market, etc. or even
universally good!

No - that particular feature depends entirely on the provider, it is by no
means universal. I know that FWD (a US-based company) allow it, but
Sipgate and Gradwell definitely don't. I can't speak for others as I don't
have accounts with any others than these.

That is exactly what I mean though. FWD is free and available through
Sipbroker. Sipbroker requires no registration so it is easy to dial
1-800s via Sipbroker.

I'm sure they will both be pleased to hear your opinions ;-)

But it isn't free, there is a monthly charge. If I only dial 2 or 3
chargeable numbers a month with Sipgate, I only pay for the cost of those
calls, not a monthly rate far in excess of that.

Do you work for whoever runs this number, Ron..? You always seem to be
pushing it.

Ah, right. I assumed you meant that all VoIP providers allowed it.

This sort of problem isn't restricted to Oz companies and VOIP.
Even very big international companies who should know better. I've had
exactly this same problem with, of all people, British Airways.
And there, when you phone in with your credit card (instead of filling
in on line) they charge you an extra 15 pounds. But in my case they
still couldn't handle it. I ended up flying on a competing airline.

Hi,
I am very interested in / curious about the 01635 number. Is this the one
that was advertised / notified here a while ago offering to provide
international dialthrough (and 0845 dialthrough [allowing dialthrough to UK
0845 numbers] as I recall / you suggest)? I thought it was pulled within a
day or two. Is it back in service or a different number? Is it the same
operator or a different one? When I tried it I got a different ring tone
(like a VoIP device or international ring pattern)... is this actually a
stuttered dial tone to then dial your onward destination number?
Hope all is well! :) ... and thanks for posting about it.

But if I only make three calls in a month that's the best part of 30p,
whereas the call charges on Sipgate would most likely be less than 10p.

same thing.
