I have a WRT54GL router for my home network. The builder of my house made a cool little box to stoe all the equipment in. I has all the Cat5 cabling, an electrical outlet, cable model and whole nine yards in it.
unfortunately, though they were slightly lacking in wireless knowledge. They made the box out of metal. I really want to stoe the router in there and use it for my wired network as well as wireless but it blocks the signal.
If I could get a couple antenna extensions I could place the antennas outside the box and it would work like a champ. However, Linksys won't recommend any extensions to me I just got off the line with their tech support.
Has anybody here extended those antenna before? if so what did you u use? Ideally i'd like to extend them about 10' and mount them in the attack but a a couple feet would probably also suffice.
The product description is a bit confusing when I google it. I see it's a stand to mount the antenna on. I'm assuming it comes with an extender. How long would that extender be? As I mentioned I need to mount the antenna outside my equipment box.
First, Does your router have removable antennas.. can they be unscrewwed from the router? Some models of Linksys do and some don't. Last I checked WRT54GL's do.
The Linksys tech didn't recommend adding a "Pigtail" for one of three reasons; (1) your router model does not have removable antennas and adding them is not really for beginners. (2) Linksys does not like consumers messing with their equipment. (3) The Customer support "tech" really isn't trained to deal with anything outside of thier "scripts"
You will need a pair of pigtails, each with an RP-TNC male and RP-TNC female connectors on each end.
Mark Oney's recommendation of a 6 foot (2 meter) pigtail is a good one. You want those extended antennas as high on the wall as you can get them.
Now, do you care about how "pretty" this install will be? You want it to look professional or do you mind holes showing?
