any wireless card t any router?

this is possibly a stupid question but i wanna be sure before i go off and buy a new wirless card...can i connect any wireless card to any router? in other words, do brands matter?

IT doesnt matter that the brands should be same but be confirm that both should be compatible with the same protocols for example if the router is of IEEE 801 protocol then card should be the same protocols

aparently alot of cards suport the IEEE 802.11, so its not such a big of a worry
