A cheap way to set up an "around the block" connection
Hello folks, I moving to a painting studio around the block from my apartment at the end of the month, and am trying to figure out a way to get my WiFi from my apartment to the studio without having to buy a load of expensive equipment. The studio is around 450ft away from my apartment, however there is a corner of a building in the line of sight.
I will be picking up the signal on my MacBook Pro in the studio, which has no external antenna options. At my apartment I have an Airport Extreme and a WRT-54G D-Link router.
My initial idea was to use the Airport Extreme as my apartment router (it has not external antenna or option for one), and hook up the D-Link to the Airport and make or buy an external antenna to beam the signal over to the studio.
I have built a "cantenna" from a tin of tomatoes at the receiving end for my neighbor a few years ago, and it worked wonders. Can a can (no pun intended) push out 450ft through a building?
Does this sound feasible for the 450ft range, or do I need some sort of directional antenna. Will the building in the way kill the signal? Can I get away without a receiver at the studio end?
PS - Both the studio and my apartment are on the 3rd floor, picture attached:
