Default Connecting 2 wireless routers

I have a question that hopefully one you gurus can answer for me. I have a Westell wireless router serving a small office area (5 laptops) and a cable running from that router to another office a few floors above - out of range of the wireless transmission. When I connect that cable to my laptop or any other laptop I have full access when I connect a wireless router to that cable I have no internet access. I've tried an old trend micro wireless router, a netgear WGR614v5 wireless router, and a Linksys WRT54Gv2 wireless router and get nothing.

Is the setup I'm attempting possible? Could there be a setting on the "main" router that needs to change? Is there another piece of equipment I need? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Convert that second wireless router in to a wireless bridge.

1) Set the WAN side of the second router to an IP address outside of your first router's LAN subnet.

2) Turn off the DHCP server on the second router's LAN side.

3) Set the second router's LAN side subnet to match the first router's subnet.

4) Do not plug anything into the second router's WAN port, leave it unused.

are you connecting the cable to the WAN port, or one of the LAN ports? WAN won't work, LAN should

@WHT - I'll give that a try!

@Mark Oney - I was plugging the cable in the WAN port. I appreciate the link to the basics - most of it I knew but it definitely helped to clarify things.

@Both - Thanks for the help, it is definitely appreciated!
