Default First wireless network - how to increase range?

Hi there,

I've just set up my home network (I've got a Netgear DG834GT) and it works pretty well, the only issue I have is the range from the thing.

I live in an older house, so the walls are really thick. At the moment, the router is by my TV and Xbox in the lounge. This works good as the DSL point is there, and I can hardwire my Xbox to the router. If I have my laptop in the kitchen etc, the signal is fine. However, the study is 2 rooms away, and I can only just get a connection.

what's the best (or should I say cheapest!) way of boosting the signal? I need a good signal in the study so I can stream my music from the PC to the Xbox.

I've recently bought another router which is on route to me as we speak - a WGU624. this supports 802.11a, which I understand I can use for the streaming between xbox and PC? Is this correct?

Thanks

Jon

Default Cheap solution

Hi Jon

The best way is to get the router as high as possible. Make sure it is not directly behind the TV tube as it is full of lead and will block the signal.
We have higher gain rubber duck antenna here http://www.gowifi.co.nz/omni.html which can help. Check our info page for hints on getting the best out of your wireless network.
802.11a can sometimes be worse for penetrating walls, it all depends what is in them.

all the best
Dale
