full signal - but no internet

Hi,my friend runs a local internec cafe' and we have been trying to connect my computer to it. i am 150 meters or so away.
i use win2000
with a corega internal card with an antenna.

in my house, i can find the network no problem
i have full signal, and the network is open with no encryption.

the icon in the bottom right says im connected, and sending and receiving packets.

i can receive an ip adredd and gate way adress etc...

but i cant get any web pages, downloads or anything to work.

any help?

Does your friend have proxy enabled on the network, if so, you might not be able to browse even if you get an IP address. Also, try to ping the gateway at your friends cafe from your PC, just to make sure it is the right IP you are connected to.

Are other nearby wifi signals present? If so, they may be sharing the same channel. Use a program like "netstumbler" to see what channels others are using. IF there are other, nearby router signals on the same channel, advise your pal to change channels on his router to anything other than channels 6 or 9 (most commonly used mfg. defaults).
