Default High Powered Wireless Router Question

Group,

I just joined and would like to first say hello.

My last Wireless Router died recently (Linksys WRT-55AG) and I am looking for a replacement router.

This time I'd really like to try and find me a High Powered Wireless Router, something with at least 200 mw of power but preferrably higher than that say up around 500 mw or maybe 1000 mw.

What Linksys routers have removable antennas on them with the TNC or SMA connectors? What other router brands have removable antennas? Im not locked in on only Linksys, so if theres other routers out there that are better than Linksys, Im all ears on advice.

Maybe I could purchase a Linksys router with removable antennas and connect an external amplifier to the router?

Here is a 1000 mw external amp.

Im looking for any advice or ideas on what my options are for products that are out there, and which ones are really good and which ones to stay away from.

Thanks for any help you guys can provide me on this.

Doug

Default What to do...

I'd have to ask you this first...What is your plans with it? First things first, Amplifiers amplify EVERYTHING they receive. This means that if your router is not really tight in its transmissions you will be blowing crap all over the place and your signal will get so noisy that even though you get an excellent connection at 1000' distance your connection will be so slow you could wait for the data to be mailed to you:-)

Baiscally what I am getting at is this: Too much power is a problem, especially if your in a neighborhood with lots of houses. You will end up with the FCC knocking at your door. If you are just trying to get a better coverage area save your money on the amp and instead put it in a good omnidirectional antenna. Most of them on the market at reputable WiFi places will do just fine. Look for a decent gain 10-15dB is perfect. Simple primer on dB is this, for every 3-4dB gain you double your signal from single strength. SO... a 10dB gain antenna is going to boost your signal by approx. 3 times its original strength. Hook that up to a good router...yes Linksys is fine:-) You will have a very good local access router setup and yu should be able to be a good distance from your router site and be getting in and out well with a clean signal.

I have a linksys WRT54GS and I put the 7dB gain antennas that they sell for the Linksys routers and it went from 150' to 700' distance. I can't get in well after about 500' but I could not go to the living room and get it before:-)

Now if you are trying to provide a booming signal for other purposes let me know and I am sure that one of us here can point you in the right direction for that too..
