how can i make my external hard drive wireless

Hi.
I have recently bought a 500 gb external hard drive. its a bit inconvenient to have to plug it into my laptop all the time and was wondering if there was a way to connect the two wirelessly.
I have a wireless internet connection though i imagine it would be quite slow to do it through that. Does anyone have any ideas??????????????????
