Default Laptop to Laptop connection

Hello guys, im new here and was wondering about one thing. I have an Acer Aspire 3620 and my friend has a Gateway laptop (im not sure what model at the moment, I can get it if needed). I was just wondering if there was a way to connect directly to one anothers computer? Thanks in advance -Ryan-

Yes, you can use what's called adhoc mode which enables you to connect two computers (or more i think) together without the need for an access point.

I've never actually used it so i'm not entirely sure how to set it up, but here's a couple of results from google that may help you:
