Default Long range wireless link with obstructions in the line of site

Hey everyone, I might be shooting arrows in the dark with this one so bare with me. I am a network professional but mainly work with Routers and Switches and don't really have any solid experience with the wifi world.
I live just a few blocks from my office (approx. 1.5 miles) with my appartment facing the office building. Although I can sort of see the roof of the building from my balcony, getting to the roof and mounting an antenna is pretty much out of the question. There are also a few buildings (approx. 3-4) along the line of site. So my question is the obvious one, are there any products out there that may allow me a point-to-point connectivity (through buildings)? If so, please advise.

Thank you in advance.

Visual line-of-sight is necessary, but not sufficient. You have to have adequate clearance beyond that. Wireless is pretty much a LOS technology. You might have some luck with 900 MHz gear.

Thanks WHT. It seems I might just be out of luck at this point then. Perhaps in the near future I'll find a way to climb up to the roof and mount an antenna there.

Cheers!

2.4GHz links can stand a little interference. 5.8GHz must have a clear LOS.

As WHT pointed out, a 900MHz NLOS setup is probably the deployment you require.

This is a hit or miss problem IMO, but the 900MHz is your best choice as long as you have some room in the spectrum.

My suggestion, get you a Ubiquiti AirView 9 w/external antenna and run around with a laptop between the two points and do a spectrum analysis. You can get those on eBunk for $60. This will tell you if the 900MHz frequency is viable. Sorry, but I'm new and can't post links yet or I would have posted one for you.

IMO, this is your best option at the moment.

Default 900 Mhz for sure

900 Mhz is a noisy freq. so an analysis is crucial. But in your application it is your best bet. You should get the exact distance. I heard 3 KM is most for some 900 Mhz Gear, add noise and may only get 2 KM so use GPS distance calculation to be sure of your distance.

Having used 5 Ghz at 1.7 KM distance (200mw, 20 dB directional antenna both ends) one tree killed me, no siginal. Once I got clear of that tree I sit at -65 Rx and lots of siginal so 5 Ghz has the range but can't be anything in the way at all. Also you want to ensure your antenna is outside first and foremost. Try shouting through your glass and tell me how well people across the street can hear ya vs being outside

Check out Ubiquiti Networks (i don't have enough post for URL yet), they make extremely good and professional wireless products for point to point. I have used their Nano system in 5G with obstructions in the way with great results.
