I just moved into an apartment that has an AP in our clubhouse. My apartment is on a first floor, my patio faces the clubhouse (about 250ft) with the swimming pool inbetween.
I have a Linksys USB54G adapter and when I put it on a long enough USB cable to reach to my patio I get 1 bar from the AP. (I have a linksys PCI adapter that is not being used, don't know the model though) I also have an XBOX 360 with the microsoft wireless adapter attached.
My question is what would be the most cost effective way to get my xbox and pc to connect to that AP. Would something like a Linksys range extender do the trick? I want to make sure before I shell out $85 that it will work.

You should try a high gain antenna, that is, if your adapter has a connector on it for an antenna. They usually will help you to gain more signal and keep a stable connection. Something between a 5 and 10 dBi would work good, especially when your far away from the AP.
You can use either an Omni or Directional antenna. A Directional would probably work better, seeing as how a Directional can focus its signal in the direction of the AP.
