Default Mi-Fi Limited to 5 Devices

Hello,

I'm trying to find out why Mi-Fi is limited to only 5 devices. Is it because of the 2.4Ghz spectrum? From what I'm reading out here there are only 14 channels available 3 of which are overlapping channels. That leaves eleven channels for devices.

5 devices would have an assigned channel and a backup channel for each. This is just a guess. It seems to be a big secret and I'm trying to find out if any of you may know.

any help is greatly appreciated.

The 5 client limit is an administrative restriction. It has nothing to do with wireless performance or technology. You can edit the configuration file to allow more connected users.

All of the five devices would still share the same channel for the AP.

Only the U.S. is limited channels 1-11, most of the rest of the world can use 1-13, and only Japan allows 1-14.

so people won't put 30 users on and cry like a girl about how slow it it.

so people don't use it as a hotspot in a bus station, clogging up cellphone channels

@Mark: That was my first guess. I just figured there had to me a more 'technical' answer too this issue. I never really questioned why there was only 5 devices. I figured that it was either an administrative issue or a money making scheme.

@WHT: That was the exact answer I was looking for. I didn't know that the allowable channels differed from country to country.

Thanks guys I have something to sink my teeth into now. If you have any links you think would be helpful please post them. I need all the help I can get. I'm in 300 level networking class at UofA, and the readings are pretty fundamental. I go to the IEEE site a lot but I spend a lot of time chasing shiney objects and never really get what I need.

Take care...

@WHT, I can't thank you enough. I'm off to the races now. This should last me the entire course and then some. I hope I can return the favor.

I hope you guys have a great Thanksgiving!

Hi
Make sure Traffic shaping is not enabled.
That can slow it down big time
