Default Is it necessary for a gigabit wireless router in a home internet setting?

Sorry for a very basic question.

I have been using TWC for many years. The modem was free from TWC and the model # is Motorola SB5100, the wireless router is D-link DI-524.

I am considering to upgrade my home wireless network, what should I do in terms of increasing speed and stability?

I am using VoIP phone and always having problems sending fax out.

Do I need to purchase a modem?

Do I need a gigabit wireless router?

Thanks.
