Question Need help on choosing equipment for 2.5 mile wireless link

Hi there,

I need some help on choosing the appropriate equipment (access points, antennas, cabling etc.) in terms of features, for an outdoor wireless link.

I would prefer reliability over speed, since the link is only for carrying a 1mbit/256kbit adsl connection.

The distance is 4km (2.5 miles) and I have line of sight.
Elevation at Point A is 118m (387ft) and at point B 28m (92ft).
The antennas will be mounted on flag poles.

If you need more information from me please ask.

Thanks in advance,

Kyriacos

I have 2 long distance connections on my network. 1 is 2.1Km and the other is 9Km. I use exactly the same setup for both. Linksys WAP54G with power hack firmware to give 84mw output power. These feed a 24db grid array. The APs are all running as APs (not bridge mode) in B mode only with WPA. I never have any problems with the hardware or the links even though I am running a reasonable amount of VoIP over these links.

This is not the only solution, there is plenty of very good equipment out there that will do the same or better job, this is what has worked for me.

I do suggest that you decide on a vendor and use that vendors products exclusively as some vendors products don't like to play with others very well. With a single vendor you will reduce compatibility issues.

Regards

Fred

I try avoiding Antenna/RF work at 2.4 GHz. It can be a tricky business for the inexperienced.

If you want a prepackaged outdoor solution, consider an Engenius EOC-3220 at each end of the circuit. I have one of these in service to bring Wi-Fi to my remote dock at the marina and it has been working well. These are powered over the Cat5 data cable.

EOC-3220 - EnGenius Datacom Products

These devices also look nice also but I have no experience using them:

Deliberant - DLB2112 802.11b/g 12dBi Integrated Radio
