Post Networking Access Points

I would like to know if Access points (A & B - both Dlink 2100AP) can exchange information over the lan wire rather than their antennae.

My Setup

I have an access point.... say C... working in remote Access Point mode(WAP545linkys)...C is connected to a router's (D) lan port.... has a fixed ip (192.168.1.245, 255.255.255.0)... C is placed on the terrace of my building (X1)...

Now A and B are placed on another building (X2)... A is in line of sight of C....i.e A will be working in WDS mode and will be placed on the terrace of X2...B is kept inside a room of X2... A and B are connected via PoE. B is working in WDS with AP mode.

Configuration information :
__________________________________________________ ______
AT BUILDING X1

For C
C(WAP545linksys AP) has the following info
IP:192.168.1.245
SUB: 255.255.255.0
WEP Encryption
Remote Access Point Mode

For D
D(router) has the following info
IP:192.168.1.1
SUB: 255.255.255.0
Also has some DNS settings becos this is an ADSL router... WAG54G linksys
WEP Encryption

__________________________________________________ ______
AT BUILDING X2
For A (receiver)
A(Dlink 2100) has the following info
IP:192.168.1.105
SUB: 255.255.255.0
WEP Encryption

For B
B(dlink 2100ap) has the following info
IP:192.168.1.106
SUB: 255.255.255.0
WEP Encryption
wirelessly Shares the router's connection locally within the room in building X2

My main aim is to share the internet connection and files over this network..
I would like to know if this sort of an arrangement is possible??
Please suggest..

A device being plugged into AP 'A' should work fine. Note if you have it in client mode and connect multiple devices to its Ethernet port via a switch you might run into a few weird connectivity problems (due to limits with the 802.11 specs).

How do you currently have AP 'B' set up and which AP do you intend on associating it to?

One option would be to set up the WAP54G as a multipoint bridge and the 2100's as bridge clients to the WAP. Using bridging (WDS) will allow you to connect more than one device at a time to the Ethernet ports of the client APs.

If you do experience any problems with WDS or bridging, it you might find you get better results if you swap out the WAP54G for another DWL-2100AP. The former uses a Broadcom chipset and the latter uses Atheros, and I have found in the past that the two don't always get along when using WDS or bridging though YMMV.

I've attached a diagram of how I think you intend to operate (basically I've just included clients), and how I'd recommend setting up each AP in that situation.

Going back to what I mentioned before, if it is possible I'd recommend swapping access points B and C as they are based on entirely different hardware. WDS is a pretty loose standard at best, so its implementation can vary between hardware manufacturers.

I hope this proves to be helpful.

The guys at the shop from where i bought the Wap545 have refused to exchange the device... So I will try my best to setup this arrangement...
What mode should I set my dlink 2100 (A) Why I ask this is becos, I live in the middle east and the firmware version of the dlink 2100ap is 2.20
D-Link Middle East - 2100AP Page

This firmware is a bit different in terms of interface and options.

I have the following modes available :
1. Access point
2. WDS
3. WDS with AP
4. AP Client
5. AP Repeater

Once I set the diagram is set up properly, do I have to enable DHCP server at A and B or do I disable it? Now who will be assigning the DHCP addresses. Is it the broadband modem?

Thumbs up Got it working!!

Thanks a lot NZLamb.

I put A in AP repeater mode (repeats C) , B in Access Point mode.
Then connected A and B by LAN Wire and then connected to B. Initially I could only ping the access points(A,B,C) and broadband router (D). I was also having a problem obtaining the ip address from B. I switched off all devices (APs and Router) and then switched them back on... it worked....
