Hello, everyone. This is my first post, so I'd like to intro myself briefly - my name's Steve.
Now that that's over with, I can continue.
Basically, I'm wanting to share my Wireless connection between two different points. I've already gotten that part done. I'm using the standard Qwest Wireless router, 2-WIRE 2700HG-D, and a Linksys WRT54Gv4 router. I'm using the Qwest for my main access in the house - and I have that protected with WPA. I'm using the Linksys (With two 7DBI High-Gain antennas) to go between my house and a friend's house, and am currently getting a connection of up to 24MBPS (as reported by the NICs, Windows) with the way the antennas are oriented right now. Connecting to the Linksys are two Linksys WUSB54G adapters. The internet connection works just fine right now, but there's one glaring error: NO security. I know that MAC Filtering is kinda useless without any encryption...but when I turn on WPA-PSK (w/TKIP), and enter the keys, it refuses to connect. And I really don't know if WEP is even worth messing with, since it's basically derived from CRC, which isn't really even setup for secure encryption.
I guess my concerns here are as follows: I'd like to know what steps I can take to secure my Linksys router as much as possible, while still being able to maintain the connection between the two points. Right now, the connection is achieving a top of 24MBPS on CH. 8 (Ch. 8 seems to be the best reception, for me)...but like I said, enable security, and nothing. And I'm enabling it on both ends, entering the key in the NIC properties, and Windows, after enabling WPA-PSK on my Linksys...I'm lost.
