Default noobie wireless long range questions

Hello I have 2 wrt54g v6 routers and I plan on making a cantenna or some thing of that sort. I would like to set my Mom up with the dsl connection she has at her business. It is a clear line of site, minus a few very small tress. The distance is about 1/4 mile may be a small amount further. I need to know a few things first.

1: how far can the antenna be from the router? I think I have to go like 200 feet from the source to where i would like to mount the antenna., So like would I have to get a booster? or move the router closer to the antenna and get another one for in the office?

2: These routers are not capable of doing a vpn, is there a way I still can do a vpn, or is there something else I can do for security?

3: Do any of you know a good tut for making a cantenna that will go 1/4 mile between these routers?

4: Do I only have to make one antenna and the other will pick it up?

Thankx for all your help in advance. I am new to these terms but am willing to learn.

The distances you've cited are prohibitive, especially considering you're using DSL. 300 YARDS is the normal, rated range of most routers. It can be higher using booster antenaes, but the lower speeds of DSL aren't likely to perform well even if they do connect. VPN is not an option; that refers to something entirely different.
