Have been asked to scope a wireless project for a friend and have one particular question that I have not been able to resolve.
The network is likely to consist of 3-4 APs providing free broadband internet access across a campsite. Likely to be typically 10 concurrent users approx expecting short peaks at 20-25 users. I'm fairly happy with the normal coverage/usage aspects of a site survey as have done a few wifi networks for enterprise (ie. intranet') networks but this is the first time I've been asked to provide Wifi for a 'public' community.
I am concerned that a single user if allowed to stream video or use P2P software could cause massive degradation for everybody else. Although a 'fair usage' policy is intended my questions are:
1. Is it possible to measure the usage by a user given that the user will setup his connection himself?
2. Is it possible to limit the usage?
Have thought about authentication, QoS and packet shaping but unsure if any of these will be suitable.
Would be very grateful for advice from anyone that has had experience of this type of problem or knows of potential areas to look into.
Based on the site(a Campsite), sounds like price may be an issue. But you could get a gateway for the site, like a Nomadix, these are desinged to installs like these, and you can restrict bandwidth on a per-user basis.
