Hi,
I was wondering if any body had an opinion on a problem that I am having.
I recently joined BT Broadband with Option 3 and decided to use the BT Home Hub for a change, and to allow for the use of BT vision or other services in the future. As my router is located in the lounge and my printers and desktop are located in the spare room, I required a way of doing the following:
1) Connecting my desktop to the wireless network for internet and filesharing as the computer does not have a wireless card.
2) To connect my printers to the wireless network without the need to keep my noisy desktop on all the time as a print server.
The Netgear WGPS606 answers both these questions as it has 2 usb ports for printer connectivity and a 4 port ethernet switch which my desktop could be plugged into. The print server could then act as a wireless bridge to the internet for the desktop and any other devices and would also allow access to the printers.
I have followed the setup procedure given by netgear and according to the netgear it has been successfully setup and connected to the BT home hub. However, even though it is indicating that it is connected I cannot access the internet when connected to the ethernet switch on the print server, and I cannot see the print server when connected to the wireless network provided by the BT Home Hub. It is strange because the netgear believes that it is connected.
To try and remedy this I have tried a number things:
1) Connecting the print server with an ethernet cable to one of the ethernet ports on the back of the BT home hub. This has worked fine, and the netgear software can find the print server to allow for setup. I have also made sure that the IP addresses all make sense and that the BT home hub acts as the sole DHCP server. I can also access the internet through the print server when it is hard wired to the BT router. So it would seem that the routing and connections are working correctly.
2) I have changed the channel of the wireless radio on the BT home hub to 6 from 11 because I have read that some devices have problems with channels around 11 and over. This has not changed anything.
3) I have made sure the static IP address on the print server has been set to the IP address given by the DHCP allocation from BT router. I have set this to "keep the same" for this mac address.
4) I checked the wireless association was set to automatic rather than by association.
Is there something that I am missing in the set up of the BT Home Hub? Has anyone else had a problem with a similar kind of wireless device not working with the BT home hub?
I have had no problem in connecting my laptop or my wifes laptop to the network, and I still can't understand why the NETGEAR thinks it connected when the BT home hub clearly thinks it isn't. However, what is puzzling is that in the devices list, the NETGEAR printer server has an entry for the ethernet connection and for the WIRELESS connection (I know this because I have checked the MAC addresses), however, it lists it as inactive even the print server still thinks it's connected. I am not sure when the entry of the print server wireless device was entered into the log of the BT Home Hub. I am assumming that it means that the device must have been connected wirelessly to the BT Home Hub at some point.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ed Morris
