Hi there, we are considering setting up a wireless network for half a dozen schools in our area, what rules/laws govern this kind of setup. We plan to use external Smart Bridge AP's and weve tested these to about 20km so we are confident of the network part what we don't know is basically 'who do we ask if we can' is it all legal. We may provide an external pipe to the internet at cost for the schools. it will all be run on a non profit basis? how do you approach punters with the tall buildings? This has all started as we are being fleeced by Telecom for any kind of service

hi paul

wifi uses an unlicenced band so there are no people to approach to see if its legal. the only thing you need to adhere to is the power ouput level restriction (i think its 4watts or 36dB - i could be wrong - there is a .govt site that tells you here http://www.med.govt.nz/rsm/licensing...ormation.html). a nice thing to do is a site survey for other wifi users to make sure you don't cause interfence on channels used by others.

for getting use of tall buildings to put gear on you may want to put a proposal together for the owners outling what it is you plan to do showing benefits to the community, how it may effect them, what it looks like etc etc and call them sir or maam not punter.

hope this helps

Hi,
Thank you, one other thing we were thinking about is 'can you buy a data pipe' from Telecom/Telstra' because i guess they see it as lost revenue

hi paul

i've heard of wireless companies getting data wholesale from telstra but i don't think you can get it everywhere. it might pay to give them a call and see what they can offer in your town.

Hi Nornet,
whereabouts in wellington are you looking at doing this?

If you're thinking about the johnsonville area, one of the guys on the zephyr project is doing exactly the same thing, you might find it advantageous to join in with zephyr?

Hi there,

We'd be interested in helping out if you want. We already have a few schools on wireless, and also have most locations in Wgtn covered, so if you'd like a hand with anything, including re-using some of our locations, or international transit, just ask.

We don't mind helping you out with some cheap equipment aswell.

Just let us know.

Cheers
