Default Slow wireless speed for WRT54GL

I just picked up a WRT54GL router, loaded with the latest Tomato firmware.

While hardwired, I get around 20+ mbps.

When I'm on wireless with full bars (right next to the router), the max I've gotten was just a little over 10 mbps.

If I get 3-4 bars,it goes down to 2-3 mbps....What's going on here?

While on my old WRT54G, I can get full speeds, even with only 3-4 bars.
