Default Strange Wireless Speeds on extender

Not sure if anyone can help me here as part of this question has to do with the same old story of wireless g capping out at about 4.5mbps.

Heres my situation,

I have a 9mbit Cable internet connection proven while wired directly to my modem and running multiple speed tests to speakeasy, speedtest.net and so on. When putting my router inline (TP-Link WR641G) and wiring directly to the router, i still get my 9mbit. While connecting wirelessly through my laptop (Intel Pro/Wireless 3945abg) my speeds drop to 4.5mbit again using the same speed tests.

Here is where it gets interesting...... I have a linksys range extender (WRE54G) that will connect wirelessly to my router and then hardwire from the extender to my laptop.... back upto 9mbit!

Can anyone explain why my laptop wireless wont go over 4.5mbit but my range extender will hit 9 on wireless???
