You can use your existing wireless hardware to set up a peer-to-peer network, which will allow other wireless-enabled devices to connect to the Internet through it and share files (which I assume is your aim). However, they will only be able to connect to the internet whilst your desktop computer is turned on(sorry about stating the obvious). If you want to do this, then Windows help or the Microsoft website (assuming you have windows) will be able to instruct you far better than I can. If, however, you want to set up a proper network then you will need a wireless router - if you want to share an internet connection then I would suggest one with a built in modem for whichever internet connection you have. Speedtouch (
www.speedtouch.com) do some fair ones - not a recommendation necessarily, just the one I have, and I think it got some good reviews, but this is really up to you.
Hope this is helpful (although you probably knew it all anyway and found reading this post monumentally irritating)
