Default What to buy to get a weak connection stronger?

Hi, new to the forum.

I have a few connections around my place that are open but the signal is too weak to keep a steady connection.

Is there a piece of hardware that I can buy that will extend the range of my laptop wireless connection to be able to keep a steady connection?

I don't have access to the routers, just my laptop.

Please help.

a repeater. also known as a wireless range extender. a stand alone device that receives and retransmits wireless signals. it has the better antenna, which is what you need but too much trouble to change in a laptop

I won't be able to hook up the repeater to the router physically as I don't own those routers so it may not be possible. Unless of course there are repeaters that allow you to connect to routers without a physical connection first??

Will a good usb wireless stick be better than the wireless connection in my laptop?

you don't hook a repeater up to anything but power

antenna > receiver > memory > transmitter > antenna

a repeater hears, stores and repeats

Default Repeater Set Up

Mark,
Correct me if im wrong, initial set up of all repeaters that I have used require you to first configure the repeater by connecting it to the router from which your trying to repeat the signal.

Why dont you try using a Wi-Fi adapter to pick up a strong signal? I use the Wi-Fire from hfield technologies and i am able to pick up some more wireless connections in my area and obtain a stronger connection than my internal wireless adapter picks up and uses.
