Default What to buy, and will it work?

Ok, heres my situation,

What i want to do is connect to my friends computer across the road, wifi will reach from his house to mine. There are a few dudes in my area, like spudnik, would be nice to be able to connect to them as well. What do i need, im assuming i need a wifi card (duh). Do i need anything else? The other thing i wanted to know is, do i have to connect to a router? like, can i connect straight to my friends computer? he ahs a usb wifi key thing

This is the card i was looking at, cheap, and its all i need, i dont need anythign special.

Default Ad Hoc connection

Put in that card and then attach a nice high gain antenna to it. Go with an omni directional one for generalized coverage or get a yagi or wireframe dish for vey high gain directional connections to specific points ( you will have to rotate it to point at the A/P you want to reach). You will be connecting Ad Hoc so you should be able to conenct to whatever network that is open for your access or that you have a WEP key for. Connecting directly to his system to view files is a whole different setup issue.

Default Ap

If use a bridge with an omnidirectional Antena, you can program that bridge, to get all the connection you need. Just set up the bridge as a multipoint, and you be able to comuncate with all of them.

U'll also need to be sure that the ISP HAS no monthly limits on Downlaods - or and ur neighbourhood will suck it up in a hurry - and their could be legal ramifications to re-distributing bandwidth from a residential feed - trust me they can tell.. Bandy - President omewireless.

Default Connect to your neighbour

Yes you can connect straight to your neighbour without a router you just have to use adhock mode. Might be a bit hard if he only has a USB adaptor as they have a small antenna. Really you need a outside omni antenna if you want to connect to multiple sources. Have a look at http://www.gowifi.co.nz/kits.html as we do have solutions for your type of problems. The card you are looking at has a RP-SMA connector which is common so there are many types of antennas you can connect to it. As long as the networks you are connecting to have enough power and sensitivity to talk to you. You would just need to mount an antenna on the side of your house that has the wireless networks nearest with the shortest cable possible.

all the best
