Default wifi between two houses

I would like to setup a wireless connection between my house and a friends. What are my options? Here are the details.

Roof Peek to roof peek is 958feet apart.

House 1 is at 318 feet of elevation roughly +25 feet to the peek of the roof.
House 2 is at 292 feet of elevation roughly +25 feet to the peek of the roof.

There is a small hill between us, however the elevation of the hill is 330 feet. about 600 feet of the distance is los with no trees or anything, the last 350 feet has a few trees and a house in los.

What are our options?

Thanks,
Matthew

Ain't happenin'. I would suggest high-power 900Mhz gear as your only option.

Default have you tried...

Have you tried using a pair of booster antennaes on your router? What about boosters on your friend's router, and an accesspoint/repeater for your router? Distance is THE factor!

Lightbulb It's easy

Go back to the store and buy a Linksys 802.11G wifi router (less than $70). Then take it home, put it's install disc into the computer connected to the router, and just follow the screens. It's money well-spent.
Since your neighbors are using encryption, you too should encrypt yours, AND you should change the channel that your router broadcasts on (by default, most routers of all brands share channel 6; wifi DSl ch. 9); change it to any channel BUT 6! Frequency sharing is a common reason that people get an intermittent signal that comes & goes. And sharing someone else's wifi can significantly slow down the connection you do have (at both ends!). May sound complicated, but the disk takes u through it well. Once it's set up, import the same encryption key you created ( be sure to type it into notepad, so you can save, copy and paste it back later!) into the blank that will come up when u attempt to connect your laptop to the router. Duplicate it in the second line, then wait for the link to acquire. Once that's accomplished, you shouldn't have to deal with it again.

It's easy to do...and you can hook up to live chat at the linksys website if you need help.

Just bought a 18dbi directional antenna on ebay for 41.00. Your only problem is house 2 is below the hill and therefore not line of sight? You may be OK if you add an 9 dbi omni directional antenna on the other end.

If I was going to go to the expense of new antennas, I'd also get some mounting poles to raise the antennas into a true line of sight, and some gas discharge lighting protectors for the antenna cables. The poles would also have to be grounded, by thick copper wire connected to rods sunk into the earth. This is cheaper than buying 900 MHz equipment, by far.

Both antennas should be directional to avoid stray phone signals, and at least 9 dBi each.
