Post Wifi speed

Hi, i'd like to know if someone could answer me about 1 interogation a got.

Let say i have a router that support b/g/n to a max speed of 300mbps.
I have few device such as a laptop and ipod touch. The laptop support N speed but the ipod touch support only G so a maximum of 54 mbps.

Somebody told me that if i'm using both device at same time, the router will be able to send signal to both at 54 mbps. In a certain way, it's logical, but a the same time, it's useless to pay for faster router if one of my devices is slower. If someone could help me to understand, or know some link that could have the answer, i would appreciate it

Thank

if you set it up for mixed mode ( N & G )

it will
  • listen for n devices for a while
  • reply to them if they speak up
  • listen for g devices for a while
  • reply to them if they speak up
  • back and forth
  • not hearing n devices while in g mode
  • not hearing g devices while in n mode
  • not hearing anthing while switching modes
wasting a lot of time

if you set it up as a straight g device
it can run at up to 54
if you can set your n equipment up to behave like g devices

and you can set everything up as n devices in the future
if you replace the one g device

if you buy a g router you will wish you had bought an n router later on when you replace the g device.
