Default WiFi - Virus Transfer??

I am new to WiFi as of last week, and thanks to people on here I got a nice card - and I'm up and running. My neighbor is great enough to let me piggyback off his signal.

My question is this: If he picks up a virus, can it be transferred to mine via the wireless signal? Or vice-versa? We do NOT connect to each others computer.

I know that may be a totally retarded question, but I've never used WiFi before. And if I get a virus I certainly don't want it to get on his computer.

Thanks!!

Firsly, didn't your teachers tell you that the only stupid question is the one you didn't ask?
You would have felt worse not asking so don't worry about it, this is what forums are for.

and to answer your question...
Any internet connection is open to virus',
Any network connection is open to virus',
A CD/DVD burnt by a mate, is open to a virus.
etc,etc,etc.

If you have a computer and you connect it to other computers (this is what you are doing) or you use a disk that has been in another computer (or a memory/usb stick/pen drive) then you are open to a virus.

This is why it is nessesary to keep your computer up to date with service packs, updates, antivirus, firewalls and spyware protection.

Your computer is connected to your neighbors and his/hers is connected to yours, and so is mine (via the internet). We are all open to virus.

I'm not trying to scare you, but you need to be protected, there are good freeware AntiVirus' out there I can mention some but I'm not sure if it would be considered "naughty" by the forum moderators.

do a google for "freeware antivirus" the first couple are both good, my preference is number two, but others would prefer number 1 (not counting sponsored links)

Enjoy your connection, well done

Here's the rest of the story (thanks Paul Harvey): Before I dropped ATT, I noticed that my computer was doing some quirky stuff, especially Firefox. I put it down to Firefox 3beta. Then this past Wednesday I noticed that Avast 4.8 Pro was no longer in my System Tray. I think when I ran ComboFix it shut it down.

For the past few days I've been having more browser/computer speed problems, went into SafeMode and found 10 viruses and 3 decompression bombs. The bombs were movies, and Avast thinks they are probably okay. I have posted in a few other forums on the viruses.

Most likely I picked them up on my own and not via my neighbor's computer. There were a few Zip files that I downloaded and after opening them I started having problems.

But at any rate, Avast cleared them up and I left it running when I left for work this morning doing a final scan. I just was concerned because I know so little of how WiFi works. Until Avast was prevented from starting I've had very little problems. I run XP Pro SP2, Comodo Firewall, Avast 4.8 Pro, Spybot S&D.

And THANK YOU for the prompt reply!!!!!

And thats what I get for assuming (by ur qustion) that you were a novice. Stupid me.
Sounds like ur running the right stuff, comodo is popular and good, and firefox is too, I've not used avast pro, but the freeware for non commercial suits many a home owner and is very good so I'd expect it is also.

I've no idea where you have posted but seems ur naming names, "hijack this" is a sweet problem finder if you know what you are looking for, and if not there are www's that you can post a log file for it up-to and they will tell you what to kill. killbox couples well with it to make sure they are gone.

Good luck with the cleanup.

np, ur welcome
